NEW LEXUS LX: OPULENT CRAFTSMANSHIP, BROAD CUSTOMER CHOICE
The all-new Lexus LX introduces qualities that represent the next chapter of Lexus, from its powerful design to new powertrains, advanced technologies and superb performance, whether driving in the city or on the harshest rough-road routes.
Exacting customers will be able to select the grade that best suits their lifestyles with Lexus offering the broadest choice of variants ever with its flagship luxury SUV.
Two new Lexus engines – twin-turbocharged petrol LX 600 and diesel LX 500d V6 units – are smaller in capacity than the model’s previous V8s, yet deliver significantly more power, higher torque and improved fuel economy.
As the first full model change in 14 years, the all-new LX debuts F Sport and range-topping Ultra Luxury grade as well as seating for four, five or seven, depending on the grade.
The all-new flagship SUV range starts from $148,8001 for the 3.3-litre twin-turbo LX 500d, while the 3.5-litre twin-turbo LX 600 sibling is priced from $152,300.1
The seven-seat LX 500d and LX 600 are generously equipped, including the new Tazuna Cockpit where the design and layout of the controls and information displays are precisely calculated for quick and easy operation with least movement of the eyes or body.
A 12.3-inch main display, 7.0-inch lower display, 8.0-inch multi-information display and a colour head-up display communicate a vast array of information through the latest-generation Lexus multimedia operating system.
Lexus Safety Sense+2 – now with improved and additional functions – is provided as standard on the new LX, adding to the vehicle’s comprehensive safety and security credentials.
New driver-assist technologies include intersection turn assist2, which can detect a high collision risk with oncoming vehicles or crossing pedestrians. The pre-collision safety system also gains emergency steering assist2 that provides extra steering support during an emergency manoeuvre.
A wealth of off-road features include Multi-Terrain Select and Multi-Terrain Monitor2 for precise vehicle control and positioning on challenging terrain.
Crawl control2 – activated at the press of a button at speeds below 10 km/h – automatically controls engine output and braking in very rough or slippery conditions, so the driver can focus on accurately steering the vehicle. A new turn assist function2 uses brake pressure to increase response to the driver’s steering inputs and give the vehicle a tighter turning radius.
A comprehensive range of Lexus Connected Services3 adds further assurance for owners with valuable safety, security and vehicle information features.
Other specification highlights include 20-inch alloy wheels, LED lights, newly developed four-wheel active height control suspension, heated and powered front seats with leather-accented upholstery, Shimamoku Black ornamentation, wireless smartphone charging4 and a 25-speaker Mark Levinson®5 premium audio system offering impeccable audio quality.
An Enhancement Pack – adding striking 22-inch alloy wheels, a moonroof and a hands-free tailgate with kick sensor – is available for an extra $5,500.
Moving up to the five-seat Sports Luxury grade brings a wealth of highly desirable features including premium leather-accented seats with heating and ventilation, heated steering wheel, cool box, dual rear-seat entertainment system and the new ‘Takanoha’ ornamentation – a wood veneer precisely shaved down to create a pattern resembling hawk feathers.
Additional security comes from a new Lexus-first fingerprint sensor to authorise operation of the push-button starter.
The lavishly appointed five-seat Sports Luxury grade is available with both diesel and petrol powertrains starting from $165,800.1
The introduction of the first LX F Sport gives a dynamically and stylistically enhanced take on the LX from $171,800.1 It gains a rear torque-sensing Torsen®5 limited-slip differential, front and rear performance dampers and multiple unique exterior touches including darkened 22-inch alloy wheels and a black mesh grille.
Interior features include F Sport seats with extra bolstering, F Sport steering wheel, aluminium ornamentation and the option of the F Sport-exclusive Flare Red interior trim.
The all-new flagship Ultra Luxury – with four independent seats and supreme comfort – is available exclusively in twin-turbocharged petrol guise from $210,800.1
Rear-seat comfort is assured with a pair of individual captain’s chairs with 48-degree reclining, massage function, deluxe headrests, a passenger-side ottoman, and exclusive quilted upholstery offered in Black and new Sunflare colours.
A unique rear centre console incorporates a touchscreen display for seat and air-conditioning controls, wireless smartphone charger4, two USB-C ports and additional storage space for a luxurious chauffeur-driven experience.
All variants bar the Ultra Luxury are available with a newly developed 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged diesel V6 engine, producing 227kW of power and 700Nm of torque from 1600-2600rpm, improvements of 27kW and 50Nm over the outgoing LX 450d.
Alternatively, customers can select the smooth and powerful 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V6 with 305kW at 5200rpm and 650Nm from 2000-3600rpm, significant increases of 35kW and 120Nm compared with the previous 5.7-litre V8.
An unsurpassed ownership experience continues with a three-year membership to the leading Lexus Encore Platinum owner benefits program6 - including the pioneering Lexus on Demand, where members can borrow another Lexus to suit their needs or when travelling interstate or to New Zealand on four occasions, for up to eight days7. Members are also provided with eight valet parking passes to use at select Westfield shopping centres and Chadstone shopping centre in Melbourne8.
All-new LX comes with three years of capped-price servicing, costing just $595 for each of the first six scheduled services with service intervals of six months/10,000km.9
Lexus Australia Chief Executive John Pappas said the all-new LX range will appeal to a broad set of customers.
“As a leading luxury lifestyle brand, Lexus aims to give its customers the luxury of choice, and the all-new LX range does just that,” Mr Pappas said.
“With two powertrains, four model grades and three seating layouts to choose from, exacting LX customers can choose the perfect variant to suit their lifestyle.”
Six exterior colours are available on the all-new LX, consisting of Sonic Quartz, Titanium, Liquid Metal, Onyx, Graphite Black and Khaki Metal. F Sport grades use the exclusive White Nova hue in place of Sonic Quartz.10
Each Lexus LX comes with the Lexus Warranty Experience featuring a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty.11

NEXT-GENERATION LEXUS DESIGN LANGUAGE FOR ALL-NEW LX
Lexus designers used the concept of ‘Dignified Sophistication’ when crafting the all-new LX, furthering the new Lexus design language first seen on the all-new NX medium SUV.
The LX design is founded on two key pillars: realising powerful on-road presence and depth, while retaining a sense of sophisticated dignity worthy of a luxury brand.
The exterior styling elicits strength and functionality while the interior provides a sense of security and comfort, with painstaking attention to detail throughout.
Measuring 5090-5100mm long, 1990mm wide and 1885-1895mm tall with up to 205mm of running clearance and a 2850mm wheelbase, the LX is longer and wider than before and brings an imposing on-road presence further strengthened by a dynamic and powerful front-end.
The next-generation Lexus design language remains centred around the signature spindle grille, reimagined on the all-new LX with seven sets of floating lateral bars that combine to give the grille a frameless, three-dimensional appearance.
Along with a front-end that curves upwards from the lower bumper and tapers down from the bonnet, an impression is created of a grille that is pushing forward out of the vehicle.
The grille also ensures superb functionality, with the broad side intakes allowing optimal airflow into the radiators to provide excellent cooling performance.
The LED headlamp cluster immediately identifies the LX as a Lexus thanks to the sweeping L-shaped daytime running lamps that push into the edges of the grille, crowned by a set of three-projector LED high and low-beam modules.
Underneath sits the intelligent adaptive high-beam system1 light module with advanced BladeScan™2 technology, offering excellent night-time road visibility.
LX windscreen pillars have been pulled more sharply to the rear to create a cab-backward design, while the 15mm-lower roofline and up to 22-inch alloy wheels contribute to a powerful yet dynamic silhouette.
The 2850mm wheelbase has been retained, due to its ideal proportions for driving performance and off-roading.
A solid belt-line runs down the side of the vehicle from front to back, while the rear-quarter pillars narrow from the roof to the window, combining with the rear spoiler and tapered rear edges to give the car a streamlined impression.
At the rear, the new Lexus design language is clear with the new “LEXUS” lettering on the tailgate, while the rear lighting adopts a signature L-shaped motif.
The tail-lights are then joined by a by a single LED light strip across the tailgate, emphasising width. A bumper with black cladding and a silver skid plate complete the exterior look.
Numerous weight-saving measures have been adopted, with aluminium panels for the bonnet, roof, roof beads, upper hinges, tailgate, doors and front fenders, contributing to a weight reduction of around 10kg.
Fresh alloy wheel designs have been developed for the all-new LX, starting with 20-inch rims for the LX 500d and LX 600. The design features six bright V-shaped machined twin spokes, contrasted with a dark metallic paint.
Sports Luxury owners step up to expansive 22-inch wheels – the largest on any Lexus – that also feature six twin spokes with a bright machined finish split by black paint. This design is also available for owners of the LX 500d and LX 600 who opt for the Enhancement Pack.
The Ultra Luxury grade also employs 22-inch forged alloy wheels with a bright paint, adding an extra layer of class to the most opulent SUV offered by Lexus to date.
LX buyers have the choice of six exterior paint hues, with the newly available Liquid Metal, Graphite Black and Khaki Metal joining the existing Sonic Quartz, Titanium and Onyx.4
F SPORT
For the first time, LX buyers will be able to opt for the sporty and dynamic F Sport grade, which brings visual and dynamic enhancements that set it apart from the rest of the LX range.
Design changes start with the spindle grille, which adopts a black mesh pattern with a dark grey frame. The air intakes also employ the black mesh look, while a unique satin-plated lip spoiler gives the F Sport a dynamic-looking edge.
The mesh pattern continues for the outer edges of the rear bumper, while satin plating is also adopted.
F Sport grades are offered as standard with 22-inch forged alloy wheels in a six twin-spoke design, finished in a black premium metallic coating for a stealthy look.
The F Sport-exclusive White Nova hue replaces Sonic Quartz in the LX exterior colour palette.3

TAZUNA COCKPIT REIMAGINES HIGH-TECH LX INTERIOR DESIGN
The LX becomes the second Lexus vehicle after the all-new NX to adopt the Tazuna Cockpit concept, blending cutting-edge technology with instinctive and natural usability.
The Tazuna concept is based around the connection between a horse and its rider through a set of reins, with Lexus designers crafting an interior offering simple and intuitive operation.
The driver is presented with a wealth of information, thanks to a 12.3-inch infotainment display, 7.0-inch lower screen, 8.0-inch multi-information display and full-colour head-up display.
All screens finely positioned to ensure the driver’s line of sight moves no more than 30 degrees downwards, allowing their eyes to stay focused on the road ahead.
Navigation and audio controls are housed within the broad 12.3-inch display, employing the latest Lexus touchscreen multimedia system.
The system adopts a simple and easy-to-read layout, not unlike a smartphone. Menu shortcuts along the driver’s side of the screen flow into a more defined list of sub-menus. A large ‘info’ area on the left side of the screen, crowned by a status display area along the top, shows additional information.
Along with Apple CarPlay®1 and Android Auto™2 functionality, the multimedia system offers dynamic voice recognition, activated by simply saying ‘Hey Lexus’ and speaking a command. This can help operate functions like opening or closing the windows and can recognise which seat the voice is coming from and react accordingly.
Over-the-air software updates are possible thanks to the vehicle’s embedded Data Communication Module, which can upgrade the system’s functionality over time.
The touchscreen system is paired with a single audio dial for power on/off and volume control, housed next to the engine start/stop button which on F Sport, Sports Luxury and Ultra Luxury offers fingerprint authentication.
A first for Lexus, up to 10 fingerprints can be registered to the vehicle. It can also be linked to the memory function that enables the seat, wheel and exterior mirror settings to be automatically adjusted to the user’s preference.
Sitting below the 12.3-inch screen is a second 7.0-inch display housing the climate controls and off-road displays, with a series of complementary air-conditioning switches housed beneath.
A combination of touchscreen and physical buttons have been designed for ultimate functionality. Switches have distinctive tactile designs that allow the user’s eyesight to remain focused on the road.
The display screen shows the settings for the temperature, airflow, vents, seat heating and ventilation, and steering wheel heating, with both the front and middle rows able to be adjusted.
All functions can also be linked through the Lexus Climate Concierge feature, which can automatically engage the seat and wheel heating when the heater is activated. It can also engage the seat ventilation if the air-conditioning is activated.
A redesign has resulted in improved heating and cooling performance, with the adoption of an X-turn evaporator that minimises refrigerant pressure losses and creates a more even temperature distribution.
Below the air-conditioner controls, the LX incorporates driving-related switches for drive modes, high/low-range, off-road traction control, multi-terrain select, downhill assist control and crawl control – all paired with the screen to offer a range of read-outs that can improve operability.
Occupants can use the 7.0-inch screen to display a wealth of vehicle information ranging from acceleration, braking and G-force characteristics to suspension and drive mode settings, traction control and Multi-Terrain Select status, and more.
The 8.0-inch multi-information display offers excellent clarity and visibility. It is paired with four analogue needle gauges for simple powertrain information.
A wealth of information relating to active safety, engine, transmission, trip details and the outside environment are available on the multi-information display at any one time, while F Sport features a unique display.
A full-colour head-up display (HUD) is standard across the range and delivers excellent readability. It can show details of vehicle speed, speed limits, tachometer, transmission shift position, dynamic radar cruise control, lane trace assist and emergency pre-collision braking.
The HUD’s display position and brightness can be adjusted using steering-wheel switches. The user’s preferred position is kept in the vehicle’s memory settings.
Steering wheel switches are grouped according to function, with driver-assist functions on the right side, multi-information display adjustment on the left and audio switches running along the bottom of both sides.
Each LX is equipped with a premium 25-speaker Mark Levinson®3 audio system offering superb clarity and definition, with speaker grilles finished in a distinctive pattern resembling the veins of a leaf.
The newly designed steering wheel is wrapped in genuine leather and finished with woodgrain around the inside of the wheel. Wood finishes range from Walnut Brown, Takanoha and Shimamoku Black4 depending on grade. F Sport, Sports Luxury and Ultra Luxury add two-mode steering-wheel heating.
Designers have crafted a shift lever that gives the impression of metal wrapped in a single piece of leather, with F Sport adopting sporty perforated leather.
Refined passenger comfort is assured with heated front seats offering up to 10-way driver and eight-way passenger powered adjustment with three pre-set positions available.
Showing painstaking attention to detail, seat designers have optimised the seat cushions to provide strong posture support when turning or changing lanes. Seat bolsters have been lengthened for greater lateral support.
F Sport bolsters are 10-per-cent firmer than other variants and – along with Sports Luxury and Ultra Luxury – gain ventilation.
A large storage box in the centre console can be opened from either side. It holds a cool box on Sports Luxury, F Sport and Ultra Luxury variants.
Further storage is found in the generously sized glovebox, while a small storage nook in front of the gear shifter joins a pair of cupholders and wireless charger in the list of centre-console storage solutions.
Rear-seat occupants can set their own climate controls with an integrated panel on the back of the centre console, which also offers a 12V accessory socket and pair of USB-C ports.
Second-row seats are heated on Sports Luxury, F Sport and Ultra Luxury, and offer the ability to either be folded or tumbled forward to liberate extra space.
Power-folding second-row seats are standard on Sports Luxury, while seven-seat LX 500d and LX 600 employ power-folding third-row seats that stow neatly into the floor.
USB-C charging ports and cupholders are available for third-row occupants. The cargo area offers a 220V power outlet.
Highlighting the craftsmanship and technology within the LX, 14 carefully selected colour themes are offered for interior illumination, along with 50 other custom colours for ultimate customer choice.
Cargo space is 1109 litres with the second-row seats upright, with as much as 1960 litres available with the second-row seats stowed. Ultra Luxury provides 767 litres of luggage volume.
All grades feature a toolkit located under the cargo floor, while F Sport, Sports Luxury and Ultra Luxury add 5.4 litres of additional storage.

FLAGSHIP ULTRA LUXURY GRADE TAKES LX OPULENCE TO NEW HEIGHTS
The introduction of the first Ultra Luxury flagship variant creates a new level of grandeur for the range-topping luxury SUV.
Positioned above Sports Luxury, Ultra Luxury is the first four-seat layout for an LX with two individual second-row captain’s chairs that offer the utmost comfort for a chauffeur-driven experience.
Ultra Luxury is designed to offer rear seats capable of providing support from the feet all the way up to the head, while maintaining a steady posture even on rough roads for the most comfortable journey possible.
Each premium leather seat, featuring an exclusive quilting pattern, has been carefully crafted to ensure a neutral, relaxed posture for occupants, with generous side supports and the adoption of high vibration-absorption urethane material on the squab to reduce any unwanted shocks.
They are equipped with concave extra-large headrests. The passenger-side occupant can elevate their feet with an adjustable ottoman that folds out from back of the front seat, upholstered in a premium stain-resistant covering.
Occupants have access to a vast range of seat adjustment options available through a screen mounted on the rear centre console.
Seats can recline up to 48 degrees and can slide back and forwards up to 90mm.
Passenger-side rear-seat occupants can gain additional space by moving the front passenger seat forward up to 114mm. The seat back can also be tilted forward and the headrest folded forward.
Up to 1000mm of legroom (passenger side) is available for occupants, for a truly spacious and relaxed journey.
Two single-touch pre-set seat modes are available. ‘Relaxation’ mode fully reclines the chair and allows the maximum amount of space to be created. A ‘Seat return’ mode moves the chair back to its natural seating position. A memory function enables owners to specify two unique seat positions.
The rear seats offer seven massage programs with five levels of intensity. For the optimum massage feel and pressure, Lexus engineers adopted a star shape for each of the 16 air bladders.
In addition to second-row seat heating and ventilation, Ultra Luxury offers roof vents that shower occupants with acclimatised air. Additional vents are located on the side of the centre-console base. Sunshades are fitted to the rear side windows.
The rear centre console also features multiple storage options, including a two-way opening storage box with a range of charging ports, two cupholders, a smaller storage area underneath the console and a wireless smartphone charging pad1.
Ultra Luxury (and Sports Luxury) is equipped with the dual rear-seat entertainment system, consisting of a pair of 11.6-inch full high-definition LCD touchscreens capable of playing media via WiFi or an HDMI cable.
Operation can be linked with the front-centre display with audio played through the vehicle’s speakers. Alternatively, the system allows different content to be played on each screen, with audio piped through headphones (purchased separately).
Touch operation removes the need for a remote control.

ADVANCED SAFETY AND SECURITY FOR NEXT-GENERATION LEXUS LX
The next-generation luxury Lexus LX spearheads a revolution in the development of electronic safety and security technology.
The advanced Lexus Safety System+1 suite of safety technologies – standard on every LX – has been substantially expanded in the new LX, providing an unprecedented level of protection for occupants and road users.
Upgrades to the cameras and millimetre-wave radar have expanded their operating range and enabled new driver assistance functions to be introduced.
Additional active safety technologies help with safer manoeuvring, while the passive protection provisions include a robust vehicle structure and a full complement of cabin airbags.
The driver-assist systems provide valuable support in controlling and placing the vehicle when driving in challenging off-road conditions, and when making low-speed manoeuvres in on-road driving, such as parking and negotiating narrow streets.
Pre-collision system (PCS)
PCS can now recognise oncoming and preceding vehicles and pedestrians in the car’s path in both day and night-time driving, applying audible warnings and autonomous emergency braking if required. Cyclists and oncoming vehicles can be detected during the day.1
The system also gains intersection turn assist, which can provide a warning and apply autonomous braking if the driver intends to turn left or right in the path of an oncoming vehicle in an opposite lane, or a pedestrian crossing the road from the opposite direction.1
PCS also gains new emergency steering assist, which provides extra support during the day when the driver makes an emergency manoeuvre to avoid a hazard, maintaining vehicle stability while keeping the car within its lane.1
Dynamic radar cruise control (DRCC)
DRCC on the LX uses the radar and front camera to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, automatically controlling acceleration and braking, slowing the car to standstill if necessary.1
The system has a new curve speed reduction feature that can automatically slow the vehicle in a bend to help reduce the burden on the driver.1 This is particularly helpful on long, windy roads.
Another new feature is indicator-linked cruise control. When the indicators are used in preparation for overtaking a slower vehicle (at 80 km/h or above), the system automatically accelerates the LX to its target speed to allow more seamless overtaking.1
Other assistance features
Road-sign assist uses the front camera to detect speed and other signs, displaying them on the vehicle’s multi-information and head-up displays. Users can also rest the DRCC in accordance with the identified speed limit.1
Lane trace assist can now operate in a wider range of driving scenarios to keep the car centred in its lane, even when lane markings are not visible, by following the path of the vehicle ahead and recognising the road margins.1
Lane departure alert warns the driver and, if necessary, applies steering force, if the vehicle deviates from its lane without the indicator being operated.1
Additional safety features
The LX is available with numerous additional active and passive safety features that can make operating the vehicle easier and safer.
It is the first Lexus to offer a new standstill blind-spot monitor (BSM). This uses the existing BSM radar to detect vehicles and bicycles approaching from rear when the vehicle is stationary and a door is being opened. It alerts the driver with a buzzer and a warning light in the appropriate door mirror. The regular BSM detects vehicles travelling in the driver’s blind spot in adjacent traffic lanes.1
Parking support brake can detect objects, vehicles and people in the car’s path, automatically controlling drive force and braking control to help prevent or mitigate damage.1 Another monitor provides constant surveillance of tyre-inflation pressure.
The Lexus LX’s electronic aids supported by an advanced mechanical package that enhances on-road and off-road safety.
The all-new platform, lower centre of gravity, high ground clearance, even more efficient braking system and advanced suspension systems have combined to provide owners and occupants with leading safety performance.
The LX provides fundamental impact protection with an impact-absorbing structure that uses high tensile strength steel in key areas to maintain cabin integrity in the event of a collision.
The impact beams in the doors have an aluminium-and-steel hybrid construction to prevent deformation, keeping the door from bending inwards.
There are 10 airbags: driver and front passenger, driver’s knee, front-centre, front and rear side, and curtain shield airbags. In Ultra Luxury, the rear seats are fitted with additional cushion airbags.
Lexus LX debuts fingerprint security identification for engine start-up. Up to ten fingerprints can be registered to authorise ignition – and each can be linked to seat and other memory position settings.
Fingerprint recognition is part of a progressive keyless smart entry and starting function, which provides security and access by connecting the new ultra-slim key with five exterior and three interior antennas on the vehicle.
All-new LX utilizes four security cameras placed around the vehicle to provide unobstructed views of its surrounds and clearly identify potential hazards.
The Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM) offers front, rear, panoramic and now “see-through” views. A transparent image of the LX’s body allows the driver to view areas around and underneath the vehicle which would otherwise be hidden.
The increased scope of vision is of great importance in off-road situations but equally in city and even home-driveway use.

PEAK PERFORMANCE MEETS LEXUS REFINEMENT AND HIGH EFFICIENCY
Lexus is delivering flagship levels of performance, refinement and efficiency by developing new twin-turbocharged V6 petrol and diesel engines for the all-new LX.
Smaller in capacity than the previous model’s naturally aspirated V8 units, the new engines deliver significantly more power, higher torque and improved efficiency.
Both engines are matched to a new 10-speed direct-shift automatic transmission that makes the most of their extended torque characteristics to ensure powerful, linear acceleration.
3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol
The LX 600 is powered by a new-generation V35A-FTS 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine – an extension of the highly acclaimed Lexus LS 500 powertrain
World-class thermal efficiency and specific output is achieved courtesy of high-speed combustion technology, including the adoption of a long-stroke design, high-efficiency ports, laser-clad valve seats and multi-hole direct injectors – as well as a high-efficiency water cooled intercooler.
Three Lexus firsts further boost efficiency, including an electronically controlled coupling fan that selects the optimum cooling fan speed; an electric wastegate valve with precise control for the turbocharger boost pressure; and an upstream purge system for the turbocharger.
A new piston design also allows for both low emissions and quietness, complemented by the high-rigidity crankshaft, high-strength connecting rod and dual mass damper pulley.
The SUV-dedicated version of this engine allows for driving on steep slopes and rough roads. With the twin turbocharger offering wide and flat torque characteristics that deliver boost from low speeds, the twin-turbo petrol V6 delivers easily controllable powerful performance on- and off-road.
The result is 305kW of power at 5200rpm and 650Nm of torque between 2000rpm and 3600rpm – increases of 35kW (13%) and 120Nm (22.6%) over the previous V8.
Combined with a 100kg-plus reduction in kerb weight, combined-cycle fuel consumption of 12.1 litres per 100 kilometres1 represents an improvement of 16 per cent compared with the previous 5.7-litre engine.
3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel
For luxury customers seeking an even further extension on vehicle driving range on a single tank and a further increase in torque, Lexus is offering a new-generation F33A-FTV 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged V6 diesel engine.
Low-flow combustion technology and newly developed turbocharging realise higher outputs and lower fuel consumption.
The diesel engine shares the Lexus-first electronically controlled coupling fan with the petrol engine to increase efficiency. A two-way turbo system with variable nozzle mechanism is another Lexus-first that contributes to excellent and immediate response.
Other Lexus firsts include a high-precision EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) with a DC motor-driven switching valve, a 270 MPa common rail fuel injection system (with high precision solenoid injectors and high-efficiency supply pump), a high-strength thin wall cylinder block with steel pistons, and a split-pin crankshaft.
The result is an impressive 227kW of power at 4000rpm and 700Nm of torque from a low 1600rpm until 2600rpm, increases of 27kW and 50Nm compared with the previous diesel engine.
Superb combined-cycle fuel consumption is rated at 8.9 litres/100km1, falling to as low as 7.6 litres/100km in extra-urban conditions – an improvement of up to 10.6% over the previous 4.5-litre engine.
The LX 500d Sports Luxury and LX 500d F Sport use the same 110 litre fuel capacity as all LX 600 models, enabling a potential maximum cruising range of 1,447 kilometres. The main tank holds 80 litres and the sub-tank 30 litres.
The LX 500d also weighs-in within 55kg of the LX 600’s lowest kerb weight, from 2630kg.
Both powertrains use both active noise control (ANC) to reduce unpleasant booming. The LX 600 employs engine sound enhancement (ESE) that provides pleasing additional sound during acceleration and deceleration.
ANC uses anti-noise waves through the speakers, with frequency calculated from engine speed (between 1000rpm and 6000rpm) and interior booming noise data collected by the cabin microphone unit. High-precision silencing can be achieved within frequencies from 30 to 200 Hz, up to the eighth order of engine rotational vibration.
ESE is activated on the LX 600 when the driver selects Sport S, Sport S+ or places the powertrain in Power via the Custom mode, as an extension of ANC. It focuses on maximising sporty sound operation in concert with the accelerator pedal and acceleration G-forces, actively emphasising half-order vibrations at high engine speed to deliver additional depth of sound.
10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission
The new 10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission in LX 600 and LX 500d replaces the eight-speed gearbox from the previous LX.
A torque converter provides smooth starts, in concert with a lock-up device that provides a direct and connected feel through the powertrain. Direct connected downshift has also been adopted, enabling shifting to pass through an intermediate gear when quick acceleration is required, downshifting from a high to low gear.
Four planetary gears enable 10 gears within the compact and lightweight gear train, providing close ratios.
The new first gear offers a three-per-cent lower gear ratio for sharp off-the-line acceleration and robust off-road performance.
Second, third, fourth and fifth gears are closer together and more evenly spaced to promote rhythmical shifting. When the previous transmission was at the engine of its third gear, the new transmission is already at fourth gear.
Taller ninth and 10th gears also promote low fuel consumption and low noise, especially during high-speed cruising.
When the driver selects Sport S mode, the accelerator response sharpens to prepare the all-new LX for a sportier driving style.
An oil pan guard is also provided to reduce the risk of transmission impact when off roading.
Braked towing capacity remains a significant 3,500kg for both LX 500d and LX 6002.

ALL-NEW PLATFORM ENABLES HIGH PERFORMANCE AND REFINED STEERING, RIDE AND HANDLING
A new platform, highly rigid and lightweight body, and new suspension, steering and braking systems ensure the quality of performance and handling with the all-new LX fully express the Lexus Driving Signature.
Lexus engineers focused on achieving a relationship between vehicle and driver that achieves new dynamic heights with a smooth, linear response to steering, acceleration, braking and overall driveability.
To strike the ideal balance between ride quality and handling, Lexus engineers increased the vehicle’s body rigidity and tuned the chassis to ensure the driver feels as one with their vehicle with an immediate feeling of confidence.
Global Architecture GA-F platform and highly rigid lightweight body
All-new LX is the first Lexus model to use the GA-F Global Architecture platform, designed specifically for body-on-frame vehicles.
Computer-aided engineering was used to measure deformation while driving and help develop a robust, high-strength frame designed to manage the stresses and forces encountered in challenging off-road driving. Overall torsional rigidity has improved by 20 per cent.
Ultra-high-tensile steel is used to reinforce key areas and the front cross-member has a new bridge structure. Further benefit is gained from an increase in the rigidity of the steering gearbox and from a towing receiver that is built into the frame to support customers who will appreciate the 3,500kg braked towing capacity1.
Additional spot welds on the cowl and structural adhesive around the door openings and vehicle floor also contribute to rigidity.
In a first for Lexus, curved tailor-welded blanks are used in the frame, saving significant weight while achieving high rigidity.
As a result, the excellent cabin rigidity enhances on and off-road performance, steering responsiveness and feedback, rear grip feel, ride comfort and driving feel.
Lexus engineers targeted exhilarating driving performance unaffected by the vehicle’s size and height as well as supreme comfort that prevents tiredness and delivers impeccable cruising performance and quietness on all surfaces.
While the 2,850mm wheelbase is unchanged compared with the previous generation model, all-new packaging has resulted in the engine mounting position being lower and further rearward in the engine bay for optimised front-rear weight distribution.
A lower centre of gravity – further aided by a new, aluminium roof – promotes increased dynamism on all roads by allowing the all-new suspension to shine.
Suspension system
The newly developed double wishbone front suspension system targets enhanced vehicle stability, stable cornering posture by suppressing front lift during cornering, and confident vehicle posture during braking.
An enlarged upper arm and lower arm cross-section has been employed to allow for the LX-first 22-inch alloy wheel design – the largest wheel ever offered on a Lexus. A high-strength lower arm uses high-tensile steel and the caster trail has been enlarged for greater stability.
The rebound stroke has been raised by 15mm compared with the previous-generation LX, complementing the adoption of a 45mm diameter piston within the shock absorber to reduce friction – enabling ride comfort to co-exist with control.
High-strength forged aluminium has been used for the suspension knuckles, and high-strength (1,300 MPa) material adopted for the coil springs, producing the dual benefits of enhanced front suspension rigidity and reduced weight.
The double-wishbone front suspension is joined by a newly developed trailing-link rigid-axle rear suspension system with layout and characteristics that focus on the reduction of shock and vibration inputs.
The suspension arm and shock absorber placement has been fine-tuned and the stabiliser mounting position changed, with an enlarged axle housing cross-section increasing both suspension and axle strength.
The shock absorber has been moved outwards for greater axle movement and controllability, while the rebound stroke has been enlarged by 20mm – joining a similar increase for the front shock absorbers.
A high attachment point has been used for the lower control arm, ensuring a stable posture with suppressed rear lift during braking. The lower control arm has also been placed parallel to suppress ‘axle steer’ and enhance overall stability and refinement.
Both front and rear axle housing wall thickness has also been reduced, delivering key weight reductions.
Active Height Control and Adaptive Variable Suspension
Every all-new Lexus LX also features 4-wheel active height control (AHC) suspension and adaptive variable suspension (AVS) to deliver maximum off-road ability combined with a broad range of comfort-oriented and dynamic personalities.
AHC and AVS use the hydraulic pressure of each wheel’s shock absorber to control vehicle height and damping force to best suit the driving conditions or the driver’s preference.
For the AHC system, oil is sent from the pump to the shock absorbers – which extend and compress to adjust vehicle height and spring strength.
Compared with the previous LX, the Normal vehicle height setting has been reduced by 23mm to further promote the new-generation model’s lower centre of gravity and enhanced handling performance. The cornering roll rate has been reduced by 25 per cent compared with the previous LX.
In the Low setting, vehicle height is reduced a further 27mm to promote easier entry and exit.
When driving on rough or unpaved roads, the High1 setting raised the vehicle by 23mm (if the transfer case is in high-range) or 57mm (low range). In High2, that extends to 73mm (high-range) or 83mm (low-range). The all-new LX can also detect if the vehicle is stuck off-road and requires further extension, raising the vehicle height to a maximum 103mm where required.
The LX’s suspension also features an auto-levelling function where a consistent vehicle height can be maintained, regardless of load conditions including number of occupants, level of luggage and maximum towing.
For the latest-generation AVS, Lexus has adopted a new, lightweight assembly using an aluminium housing, while replacing the previous system’s step-motor actuator to a highly-responsive linear solenoid type allowing increased damping force range.
The damping force switching levels have been increased to 650 continuously variable levels, targeting improved shock isolation, a flatter ride even across undulating surfaces, and excellent steering response with improved stability.
AVS features a multitude of controls – vehicle speed-sensing control, roll posture control, anti-pitch control, repercussion control (sprung weight speed proportion control), roughness sensing control and unspring damping control. It is also integrated into the advanced safety systems including pre-collision system and vehicle stability control, using damping force to assist with friction coefficient changes in the road surface.
The driver can select three damping force control modes: Comfort, which pursues the highest level of ride comfort; Normal, for a balance of comfort and control; and Sport, to prioritise steering response and a flat ride. This is in conjunction with the drive mode select, which features Normal, Sport S and Eco with Normal damping force, Comfort, and Sport S+ with Sport damping force.
Particularly in Sport S+ mode, the Lexus LX prioritises the confidence-inspiring traits of the Lexus Driving Signature with refined front to rear chassis balance, and smooth transition between vehicle turn-in to settlement across a variety of road surfaces.
Electric power steering
The steering has also moved to a rack-assist electric power steering system for the all-new LX, with a linear and confidence-inspiring connection to the front wheels further building on the Lexus Driving Signature.
Lexus has aimed for clear steering feel for on-road driving, and confident controllability for off-road driving.
Having the motor and reduction gear installed separately and in parallel to the gearbox reduces the amount of steering operation to help the driver trace an ideal line through a corner. A vehicle speed function smoothly adjusts the level of assistance in accordance with vehicle speed – for example to provide light feedback at low speeds and increasing feedback at higher speeds.

PROGRESSIVE LEXUS LX ACHIEVES LEADING OFF-ROAD PERFORMANCE
Next-generation advances for on-board technology provide all-new Lexus LX owners with the opportunity for exhilarating off-road operation and exploration.
The principle driving controls are consolidated into just three switches and two dials on the centre cluster.
As a result, the driver can engage their preferred settings for the multi-terrain select MTS), downhill assist control and drive mode using the same mode select dial.
All-wheel drive
The new LX uses a full-time all-wheel drive system engineered for robust off-road performance and on-road stability.
Particular attention has been paid to the front, centre and rear differentials. In addition to the standard Torsen®1 centre, F Sport variants adopt a rear Torsen®1 limited-slip differential to distribute drive force between the left and right wheels in response to throttle position and terrain conditions.
The transfer case has been revised to handle a higher drive force and deliver better efficiency; its ground clearance has also been increased by 18 mm. Strength, weight-saving and efficiency improvements have also been made to the front and rear differentials.
The status of the car’s AWD system, the differential locks and the transfer range are shown on the seven-inch display in the centre console.
Transfer speed between low and high ratios has been improved by better than 25 percent to just 0.8 seconds.
Multi-terrain monitor
MTM uses four high-resolution digital cameras to keep the driver fully aware of the vehicle’s immediate surroundings.
The system presents a composite image of the front, sides and rear of the vehicles on the 12.3-inch multimedia screen, helping the driver negotiate off-road terrain or check for obstacles when parking.
A Lexus-first underfloor view – particularly useful on uneven or rocky ground – allows the driver to check the area under the vehicle.
This feature is complemented by the world’s first rear underfloor view, enabling the driver “see” through the vehicle floor to view the area around the rear wheels when reversing.
These images are recorded in advance by the cameras and shown with an appropriate delay to match the vehicle’s travel in low-speed driving.
The rear camera has a washer so that images are kept clear even in bad weather or when driving over muddy ground. MTM operates at speeds of less than 20km/h.
Multi-terrain select (MTS)
A new generation of progressive MTS technology reinforces the LX credentials for providing leading performance in all conditions and taking occupants to all parts of Australia in exclusive luxury.
The system adjusts drive force and braking control based on information from vehicle status sensors and the driver’s throttle and brake inputs.
The 2022 LX introduces an automatic MTS mode that intelligently senses the terrain and adapts its traction-control parameters to suit.
For the first time, MTS is also able to be activated in high range, providing an additional level of control and security.
The system provides optimal low-range control over sand, mud and rock, as well as high-range traction in dirt, sand, mud and deep snow. The dirt mode was developed specifically for Australian conditions.
Crawl control and turn assist
Crawl Control is effectively a low-speed cruise control that takes more of the burden off the driver when negotiating very rough or slippery conditions at less than 10 km/h.
The system automatically controls engine output and braking, so the driver can focus on accurately steering the vehicle.
It provides five speed settings to gain the best stability in a wide range of conditions, minimising wheel spin, reducing wheel lock-up and optimising load on the drivetrain.2
When negotiation tight off-road turns, additional support is provided by the turn assist function, activated by a touch-switch in the multimedia display.
With input from a steering sensor, the system applies brake pressure to the rear wheel on the inside of a turn, increasing response to the driver’s steering input and giving the vehicle a tighter cornering radius.2
Drive Mode Select
The MTS dial is used to activate the preferred drive mode, which integrates control of the powertrain, steering, air-conditioning and suspension.
Five modes are provided: Eco, Comfort, Sport S, Sport S+ and a Custom mode in which the driver can make their own combination of function settings.
The LX is also equipped with downhill assist control, trailer sway control and hill-start assist control, providing further automatic assistance to help the driver control the vehicle.
Electric power steering (EPS) provides the driver with confident control, enabling a suite of electronic aids to work in harmony to optimize off-road efficiency.
EPS assists the crawl control, turn assist and downhill assist control to help manoeuvre LX in very rough off-road situations and on low-friction surfaces.2
