LEXUS DRIVING SIGNATURE REIMAGINED WITH LAUNCH OF RZ BATTERY ELECTRIC SUV
The next chapter of the Lexus Electrified Vision has arrived with the launch of the all-new RZ battery-electric SUV, the first Lexus BEV built on a dedicated electric vehicle platform.
Following the successful launch of the first Lexus BEV - the UX 300e in late 2021 - the RZ brings Lexus a step closer in its aim of offering a fully-electrified range of Hybrid, PHEV and BEV luxury vehicles in Australia by 2030.
The new electric powertrain with e-Axle electric motors and DIRECT4 all-wheel drive adds to the renowned Lexus elements of luxurious takumi craftsmanship and impeccable build quality.
Lexus Australia Chief Executive John Pappas said the new RZ retains all the signature Lexus elements customers have come to appreciate, but now with zero exhaust emissions.
"Lexus designers have worked to ensure the all-new RZ maintains the famous Lexus benchmarks of exceptional luxury and dynamic driving faithful to the Lexus Driving Signature," Mr Pappas said.
"The RZ is the right vehicle for those wanting a luxury SUV evoking the feeling of Lexus driving with the addition of a smooth and quiet battery-electric powertrain."
The RZ launches in Australia with the choice of two grades, starting with the 450e Luxury variant from $123,0001 plus on-road costs. The flagship 450e Sports Luxury asks $135,0001.
Both variants are powered by the same compact and efficient 71.4kWh lithium-ion battery, deploying 230kW of power and 435Nm of instant torque to all four wheels and a driving range of 470km2.
Instant torque and all-wheel traction allows the RZ to sprint from standstill to 100km/h in just 5.3 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 160km/h.
All RZ grades come as standard with an 11kW on-board charger, which can recharge the vehicle in approximately 6.5 hours when connected to a three-phase power supply. Recharging to 80 per cent capacity cuts the waiting time to just 30 minutes when hooked up to a DC fast charger.3
The RZ is underpinned by the rigid and sophisticated e-TNGA platform designed exclusively for electric vehicles; providing a low centre of gravity, excellent handling balance and a long wheelbase.
Nearly two decades of Lexus expertise in battery and hybrid technology has been poured into the RZ 450e, resulting in a battery designed to perform at the highest levels and backed with a leading 10-year/unlimited kms warranty4.
A pair of electric e-Axles are mounted at the front and rear of the RZ; each comprising a motor, gearing and Power Control Unit (PCU) to calculate and instantly distribute infinitely variable power to each individual wheel.
The e-Axles operate in harmony with the Lexus DIRECT4 all-wheel-drive system that constantly processes information including vehicle speed, steering angle and G-forces to best deploy motor torque.
DIRECT4 makes precise adjustments in milliseconds for an electric take on the Lexus Driving Signature, delivering a new dynamic benchmark where the vehicle responds faithfully to driver inputs and inspires confidence.
The RZ ushers in new design elements for Lexus, signalled from the exterior with the trademark Lexus spindle grille now more prominent as the shape extends through the vehicle body.
Generous appointments are found throughout the RZ range, with the Luxury offering 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with static auto-levelling and headlight washers, LED daytime running lights, rear spoiler, rear privacy glass and heated side mirrors and driver's side auto-dimming with auto power folding function.
The strong specification continues inside with NuLuxe upholstery, eight-way driver and front passenger power adjustable seats with two-way driver lumbar adjustment, 14-inch multimedia display, 10-speaker Panasonic®5 audio with DAB+ digital radio6, wired Android Auto™7 and wireless Apple CarPlay®8, five USB-C ports, a wireless phone charger9 and a smart key card.
Customer assurance is enhanced with a suite of Lexus Connected Services10 offered as standard, along with a comprehensive range of Lexus Safety Sense+11 features.
The flagship Sports Luxury furthers the specification of the Luxury, adding 20-inch alloy wheels, acoustic glass, dynamic auto-levelling headlights with cornering function, Ultrasuede interior trim, heated outer rear seats, ventilated driver and front passenger seats, heated steering wheel and the new radiant front heating feature for front passengers. A black two-tone paint option is also available12.
Comfort and convenience is furthered with the addition of a 13-speaker Mark Levinson®5 hi-fi premium audio system, three-position driver's seat memory, touch sensitive steering wheel controls, head-up display, adaptive high-beam system, intelligent park assist and a dimming panoramic roof.
As part of Lexus' dedication to top-tier customer care, each RZ comes with complimentary home charger installation13, three years of complimentary charging with the Chargefox DC rapid charging network14 and a subscription to the leading Encore Platinum owner benefits program15.
Encore Platinum brings a range of ownership and lifestyle benefits including Lexus On Demand, which allows owners to borrow a different Lexus of their choice up to four times over the duration of their subscription.15
Five years of capped-price servicing16 is included in the ownership package, fixed at $395 per service with intervals of 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first.
In the future, Lexus will showcase further innovative technology on RZ with the introduction of a state-of-the-art steer-by-wire and yoke steering wheel system, combining to form the Lexus One Motion Grip system.
This electronic system offers precise steering inputs and feedback without ever needing to pass the steering wheel between the hands. More information on the Lexus One Motion Grip system will be available closer to its Australian introduction.

EVOLUTIONARY RZ 'SPINDLE BODY' DESIGN REPRESENTS NEXT-CHAPTER LEXUS EXTERIOR
As the first dedicated battery-electric vehicle from Lexus, the RZ 450e introduces a bold exterior design language for the Lexus SUV family with unique proportions and a zero-tailpipe emission take on the signature Spindle Grille.
The battery-electric powertrain eschews the need for a traditional front grille and radiator, and as such Lexus designers created the 'Spindle Body' motif that incorporates the vehicle's front end seamlessly into the body.
The closed front grille is finished in the vehicle's body colour with the headlamps and bumper corners blacked out to retain the distinctive spindle silhouette, which then flows through the bonnet and up to the windshield, providing a strong impression extending that continues all the way to the rear haunches.
Auto-levelling LED head lights use a black base to seamlessly blend into the front fascia. They feature signature Lexus L-shaped daytime running lights that cap the turn signal and high/low beam lamps.
Sports Luxury grades offer Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) dynamic levelling head lights that can also dim the road ahead to avoid dazzling other road users.1
With a low roofline and long wheelbase of 2,850mm - the same length as the larger RX and LX - the RZ provides a dynamic side silhouette with a sloped rear roofline, subtle lip spoiler and surface treatment that gives the car the impression of pushing forward.
The heavy sloping of the rear glass accentuates the coupe-like profile, while roof spoiler fins and subtle lip spoiler promote aerodynamics and handling stability and reduce drag.
The way the rear end appears to cut off almost vertically from the lip spoiler adds muscularity to the design, enhanced further with bulging rear wheel arches.
The RZ continues the rear lighting theme of recently updated Lexus models with a thin full-width LED light strip running across the breadth of the vehicle's rear end, with 'LEXUS' lettering above the light bar.
Like the head lights, the tail lights feature L-shaped signatures that flick upwards at the edges, adding a sense of width to the RZ when looking directly from behind.
The turn signal and reversing lamps have a more subdued look, while the high-mount stop lamp is neatly integrated into the lip spoiler.
The sleek exterior design promotes smooth aerodynamic performance with a low coefficient of drag of 0.293Cd.
Black exterior accents prevail on the bumper corners and on the heated and auto-dimming rear view mirrors, while Sports Luxury includes a black painted lower rear bumper, wheel arch mouldings, rocker and lower door mouldings.
Luxury variants come equipped with stylish 18-inch alloy wheels with a dual five-spoke design combining a dark grey metallic background and contrasting bright machined surface finish, wrapped in mixed 235/60 and 255/55 rubber.
Sports Luxury grades step up to 20-inch multi-spoke alloys with a black background and bright machined finish, paired with 235/50 and 255/45 tyres.
The RZ is available with the choice of six different exterior colours, consisting of Sonic Quartz, Graphite Black, Sonic Chrome, Sonic Iridium, Ether and Sonic Copper.2
Sports Luxury variants can also be selected with a special two-tone colour scheme that pairs Sonic Chrome, Sonic Copper or Ether with a black hood, bonnet and roof; while replacing the black front bumper edges with body colour to emphasise the front spindle shape.2

RZ HAS VEGAN UPHOLSTERY, LIGHT AND SPACIOUS FEEL
The first dedicated battery-electric vehicle (BEV) from Lexus presents an opportunity to offer an evolutionary take on the classic Lexus luxury interior with a spacious, light-filled cabin combined with environmentally-friendly materials.
Like other modern Lexus models, the RZ adopts the tazuna cockpit concept, designed to represent the intuitive connection between a rider and horse through a pair of reins.
The tazuna cockpit provides the driver with a smooth line of sight and minimal hand movement, maximising safety by promoting full concentration on the road ahead.
The low-profile instrument panel groups the steering wheel, multi-information display, head-up display and multimedia system in an arrangement that minimises eye movement, with all critical vehicle functions within easy reach.
At the centre of the instrument panel is an expansive high-resolution 14.0-inch touchscreen display housing the latest Lexus multimedia system including cloud-based navigation1, "Hey Lexus" natural voice recognition1 and compatibility with wireless Apple CarPlay®2 and wired Android Auto™3.
Dynamic voice recognition1 can recognise both front-seat passengers even during audio playback, and can respond to natural voice commands. It can also operate in accordance with the speaker's location - for example, if the front passenger says "open the window", only the front passenger side window will open.
The touchscreen offers physical dials for the often-used climate control and audio; paired with shortcut buttons running down the driver's side of the touchscreen for navigation, audio, phone, vehicle and general settings.
The screen layout is oriented to provide easy-to-read information and straightforward operability, just like a tablet.
Cloud-based navigation1 provides drivers with real-time traffic, parking and weather information, as well as first- and last-mile routing. Over-the-air software updates for multimedia are also available via the in-built data communication module (DCM).
Luxury variants have a 10-speaker Panasonic®4 audio system, with the diaphragms for the mid-range, woofer and coaxial speakers constructed from a special blend of resin, bamboo and charcoal which provides clear, playback with minimal distortion and a low environmental footprint.
Meanwhile, Sports Luxury grades come standard with a 13-speaker Mark Levinson®4 hi-fi premium surround sound system finely tuned to match the acoustic properties of the vehicle.
Below the multimedia screen sit three USB-C ports for communications and smartphone charging, along with a wireless smartphone charger5 for ultimate convenience.
The lower edge of the screen houses the controls for the newly developed high-efficiency air conditioning system, featuring a flat fan and motor which, along with more efficient airflow, reduces energy consumption.
The dual-zone climate control system offers nanoe®44 X air ionisation technology as well as a humidity sensor, while the new Eco mode automatically adjusts the heating parameters so that only the area around the occupants is heated, further reducing power consumption.
Pairing with the multimedia system are two different digital multi-information displays depending on variant, which on Luxury grades teams a circular speedometer and power meter with a second display showing trip information and driver assistance system status.
On Sports Luxury grades, information is grouped within the circular speedometer display, augmented with the use of a 10-inch colour head-up display operated via haptic touch controls on the steering wheel.
The adjustable head-up display can be configured into three modes ranging from 'Full' mode showing a range of driver assistance systems and vehicle speed, down to the 'Minimum' display which projects speed.
Audio, display and driver assist switches are housed on the three-spoke steering wheel, with paddle shifters used to set four levels of regenerative braking strength.
The instrument panel and front bonnet are set low to provide an excellent field of vision, with the passenger side air conditioning blower moved to the centre of the instrument cluster and the front passenger airbag set further forward in the dashboard to reduce panel height.
A first for Lexus, the gear shifter mounted on the centre console features a rotary design and is neatly integrated into the centre console alongside a pair of cupholders and the wireless smartphone charger5.
The EV powertrain allows for a generous storage tray to fit underneath the centre console, along with a 12V accessory socket for further charging options.
A two-way opening console box and door pockets offer further storage solutions for front passengers.
On Sports Luxury grades, the centre console is finished with a special ornamentation pattern called Tsuyasumi, a charcoal-like effect created by overlapping numerous delicate layers of material, providing a highly textured finish.6
Luxury variants feature a gun metal grey coated finish.6
The RZ offers vegan upholstery with no animal products used. Luxury grades come with NuLuxe™4 synthetic leather finished with a cloud-like pattern similar to that of untreated leather, applied on the doors, seats and steering wheel.
Sports Luxury variants step up to supremely comfortable Ultrasuede™4 upholstery - a sustainable suede material made partly from biomaterials and recycled PET - with stitching applied on the seats and doors.
Luxury grades can be matched with the choice of two interior colour schemes - the dark grey Greyscale and tan-coloured Hazel, which pair with a black steering wheel, dashboard, centre console and door armrests.6
Sports Luxury grades add a new colour scheme called Storm, pairing light grey suede seat upholstery with Solis White synthetic leather on the centre console, door armrests and door upper, emphasising the airy and open feel of the cabin.6
Flagship grades also offer 14 different colour tones and 64 total colours for the ambient interior lighting on the doors, console and footwells; divided into five different colour 'themes' - healing, relaxing, arousing, focusing and exhilarating.
Sports Luxury also features a new light ornamentation for the first time on a Lexus called Shadowy Illumination, projecting a series of wedge-shaped lights along the front doors in a pattern to create a sense of organic sweeping lateral flow.
For Sports Luxury grades, both front and rear occupants enjoy open, airy light with the standard dimmable, split panoramic roof that changes at the touch of the button. This is done through an electric dimming function that instantly switches the roof panels from clear to opaque, cutting out UV light.
In another first for Lexus, the panoramic roof uses a special e-coating that reflects infrared radiation and reduces radiant heat on sunny days.
Heated front seats are standard, while Sports Luxury adds ventilation as well as heating for the rear outboard seats.
Sports Luxury also employs an innovative new radiant heating system to help warm front occupants more quickly while reducing energy consumption by roughly eight per cent.
While traditional convection heating warms the air, the RZ radiant heating system uses a set of panels installed at the bottom of the steering column for the driver and lower instrument panel for the front passenger, and only heats solid objects directly in the panels' line of sight.
The RZ's front seats provide eight-way electric adjustment with two-way driver lumbar adjustment, while the rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split arrangement to increase luggage space from 522 litres to 1451L. The rear seatbacks also offer two-stage adjustment for enhanced rear passenger comfort.
Intelligent EV packaging gives rear passengers ample head and legroom, with 1000mm of front-rear couple distance. A pair of USB-C chargers and 12V accessory socket are built into the rear of the centre console, while the luggage compartment offers another 12V socket.
A low loading height of 740mm ensures easy storage, with illumination provided on the tailgate and deck side.7
Sixty-four litres of space is offered underneath the boot floor, with the additional storage area upholstered to create a premium tactile feel. The underfloor storage houses the tool set, emergency kit, puncture repair kit and charging cable, among other accessories.7
1 Features depend on 3G/4G enabled DCM (available until the earlier of 2033 or Telstra 4G sunset), third party information, GPS signal strength, Australian mobile network coverage, compatible device, mobile data (at user's cost) and other factors outside Lexus' control which can limit functionality of system and may be subject to change. RZ 450e INTRODUCES FIRST DEDICATED BEV POWERTRAIN FOR LEXUS
The RZ 450e is the first dedicated zero-tailpipe emission vehicle from Lexus, using a pair of powerful eAxle electric motors and an efficient lithium-ion battery pack.
It brings together the luxury lifestyle brand's decades-long expertise in CO2-reducing hybrid and battery powertrain technology.
Lexus engineers aim to ensure the RZ offers not just superb performance but also durability, setting the ambitious target of 90 per cent battery capacity retention after 10 years.
With the adoption of the e-TNGA EV platform, the powerful and compact 71.4kWh lithium-ion battery is installed low in the vehicle floor to provide excellent handling and a low centre of gravity.
A new water-cooling system provides optimal battery performance under high loads, with heat conducting material placed between the cooler and sealed battery pack to provide even cooling.
High-resistance long-life coolant is used, with the battery pack construction preventing any potential cooling fluid leaks touching the battery.
Grille shutters are added to reduce air resistance and improve motor cooling as required, while a radiator duct helps effectively channel air from the front grille to the radiator.
To facilitate faster charging speed in low temperatures, a battery heating system is installed for both AC and DC charging. A further rapid battery heating function is available for DC charging, using the air conditioning system's high voltage electric heater to minimise charging times.
For Type 2 AC charging, an 11kW onboard charger is included with owners able to select either an 8A or 16A charging current to best suit their needs. A Type 2 GPO cable is also included.
Owners can also choose to change the level of maximum charger in increments of 10 per cent - for example, an owner can opt to cap charging capacity at 90 per cent if charging their vehicle at the top of a hill, knowing that regenerative braking down the hill will recoup the last 10 per cent.
A charging schedule can also be implemented whereby charging will begin and finish at a set time, for example to facilitate charging in off-peak times.
A CCS2-compliant DC charging system is available with 150kW charging capacity, allowing the RZ battery to charge to 80 per cent capacity in as little as 30 minutes.1
Power from the battery pack is fed into dual eAxles at the front and rear, which integrate the transaxle, PCU and silicon carbide inverter into a compact singular unit. The use of silicon carbide technology - a first for Lexus - helps improve inverter efficiency with reduced conduction and switching losses.
For packaging efficiency, the front eAxle construction is short front-to-back to maximise space for front passengers, while the rear eAxle height top-to-bottom is reduced to maximise luggage volume.
Both eAxles feature permanent-magnet motors capable of rotating at up to 17,000rpm, with water-cooled oil coolers used for the motors for optimal efficiency.
The front eAxle produces a powerful 150kW/266Nm with the rear eAxle developing 80kW/169Nm, for a total system output of 230kW/435Nm.
Maximum driving range totals 470km based on the NEDC cycle used for Australian Design Rules (ADR) compliance, with average consumption of 152Wh per km.2
Instant electric torque allows the RZ 450e to sprint from zero to 100km/h in just 5.3 seconds, on the way to a 160km/h top speed.
Five separate drive modes control the powertrain, AWD system, power steering and air conditioning parameters. Normal mode provides an even balance between driving performance and energy consumption, while Eco mode sets the powertrain and air conditioning parameters to a more conservative level.
Range mode aims to preserve power consumption and maximise driving range, while Sport mode brings the most dynamically engaging steering, accelerator and AWD system settings available.
Finally, Custom mode allows the driver to choose between four different powertrain settings (Eco/Normal/Sport/Range), three settings for the air conditioning (Eco/Normal/Range) and two for the AWD and power steering (Normal/Sport).
Active Sound Control (ASC) provides pleasant driving sounds in accordance with the vehicle's behaviour, using sound modulation to reflect the drive mode, shift position and accelerator operation.

ALL-NEW e-TNGA PLATFORM OFFERS HIGH STRENGTH, LOW WEIGHT AND DYNAMIC HANDLING
The Lexus RZ is the first production model to be offered in Australia underpinned by the sophisticated and lightweight e-TNGA platform developed exclusively for use with zero-tailpipe emission vehicles.
With a low centre of gravity and excellent torsional rigidity, the platform provides ideal underpinnings for an electrified version of the Lexus Driving Signature.
Laser peening technology is used throughout the chassis to increase structural reinforcement, with laser screw welding on the rocker sections and reinforcement joints.
Laser peening helps to reduce weight while improving rigidity and crash performance, with short pitch welding around the door frames further bolstering chassis strength.
Along with the two laser welding techniques, nearly 18 metres of structural adhesive has been applied throughout the body for optimal strength.
A double annular frame construction is used on the C-pillar and rear pillar to increase strength, supplemented with the use of highly rigid foam material in key areas to minimise cross-sectional deformation.
At the front of the vehicle, braces are added to the radiator support pillars to reduce deformation and enhance steering response, with the thickness of the pillars themselves increased to further improve strength.
At the rear, braces are positioned between the wheel arches and in the corners of the fenders. All structural reinforcements are made with the assistance of computer aided engineering, which can precisely identify the strongest and weakest points of the chassis.
Weight-saving measures are applied; including the adoption of an aluminium hood and the use of foam resin moulding on the wheel arches, rocker mouldings and tailgate garnish. Foam resin is injected into a hollow mould to provide higher strength and greater panel thickness while reducing weight.
The quietness of the EV powertrain provides engineers with the chance to lift the excellent noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels of Lexus vehicles to new heights.
In a first for Lexus, engineers developed a seal that covers the entire periphery of the hood, blocking outflow of air inside the engine bay. This helps suppress airflow disturbance transmitted through the body, therefore reducing unwanted noise.
Foam coating is applied to the base of the A- and B-pillars, as well as on the rear pillar, to cover any panel gaps that may lead to unwanted noise intrusion. Acoustic glass is also used for the side windows.
The side window seals adopt a secondary lip that improves the glass run's noise insulation, helping to reduce unpleasant-sounding wind noise on the move.
Further noise insulation materials are applied to the wheel arches, hood, cowl and dash to provide the cabin quietness expected of a Lexus.
The new e-TNGA platform promotes excellent fundamental driving dynamics with its lighter, stronger construction and finely-tuned suspension, brakes and steering parameters.
Newly developed MacPherson strut type front suspension was developed to maximise the platform's dynamics while minimising inertia movement and high-frequency vibrations.
Engineers crafted new front shock absorbers with frequency reactive dampers, which vary the damping force on the extension side stroke in accordance with the road input frequency.
The damping force of the new absorber is set softer in the high-frequency range to improve ride comfort, and firmer in the low-frequency range to aid with handling stability.
At the rear, a unique trailing arm type double-wishbone set-up is adopted, tuned to handle the RZ's highly responsive EV acceleration while providing excellent ride comfort.
To achieve excellent posture and pitch control, the suspension system is supported by the Lexus motor-driven DIRECT4 all-wheel-drive system which precisely controls the fully variable (100:0 to 0:100) front-rear torque distribution.
The system receives information from wheel speed, longitudinal G-force and steering angle sensors to enhance vehicle posture, handling and grip.
For example, when accelerating from standstill, more torque is fed to the rear wheels in accordance with load transfer, while the variable torque distribution helps reduce pitch when cornering.
Camera information can even be used to determine the road condition and whether the vehicle is operating on a high- or low-friction surface.
A new hydraulic brake booster system for the RZ promotes improved brake feel and controllability.
The brakes feature an on-demand pressurising system using a high-performance pump motor, while an anti-vibration mount is adopted to reduce brake noise.
Front brakes consist of floating double-piston callipers pinching 328mm x 34mm ventilated rotors, with single-piston callipers at the rear pairing with 340mm x 18mm rotors.
Brake force distribution between the front and rear axles is optimised to reduce pitching, especially at high speeds, to give the RZ's occupants the smoothest ride possible.
If required, the brake system can send additional braking force to the rear axle to prevent the vehicle from pitching forward so as to keep vehicle posture even. At lower speeds, standard brake force distribution is retained to allow the driver to feel the effect of braking through the vehicle.
A rack assist type electric power steering system is provided with tilt and telescopic steering wheel adjustment. The variable nature of the steering system adjusts feedback based on vehicle speed, with a lighter feel at low speeds and more response at higher speeds.

LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM + OFFERS TOP-LEVEL OCCUPANT PROTECTION
The all-new Lexus RZ offers the luxury lifestyle brand's latest active safety technologies to ensure the maximum possible level of protection for occupants and other road users.
Lexus' Safety System +1 provides a comprehensive suite of protective features for occupants and other road users, starting with the Pre-Collision System (PCS)1 which combines a millimetre wave radar and monocular camera sensor for excellent visibility and capability.
PCS is designed to provide audible warnings and braking assistance if it detects a high likelihood of a collision with preceding vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists during day and night-time; as well as oncoming vehicles and motorcycles during the day.
PCS will initially issue audible warnings as the RZ approaches another vehicle or object, and if the driver begins to apply brake pressure the system will provide support as required with additional brake force.
If the system determines a high possibility of collision, it is designed to deploy full braking force which will be maintained until the vehicle comes to a stop.
Pre-collision braking also triggers the emergency steering assist1 function, which is designed to support the driver during an emergency evasive manoeuvre by providing additional steering torque while preventing the vehicle from leaving its lane.
PCS offers strong protection at intersections with the intersection collision avoidance support1 feature, which can detect oncoming vehicles in up to two adjacent lanes when the RZ is turning at an intersection, as well as crossing pedestrians and bicyclists crossing the intersection following the turn.
The system is also designed to detect vehicles crossing at intersections, providing braking force if it senses a perpendicular vehicle set to cross the intersection at the same time as the RZ.
The RZ's dynamic radar cruise control1 system increases the number of preceding vehicle distance settings from three to four, with cruise control settings configurable through a set of buttons on the steering wheel.
Sensors and cameras are able to detect other nearby vehicles three-dimensionally, allowing the RZ to react early if a preceding vehicle begins to cut into the car's lane. It can also spot vehicles further down the road, helping to inspire confidence and reducing unnecessary acceleration or deceleration.
Preceding vehicles and those entering and leaving the RZ's lane ahead of the vehicle are also displayed on the car's multi-information display.
Dynamic radar cruise control features full speed range, allowing the RZ to automatically follow vehicles in low-speed and stop-start traffic conditions.
The cruise control is linked with the road sign assist1 function, which allows the driver to easily change the pre-set speed setting in accordance with the identified new speed limit. The colours of the speed limit sign in the multi-information display will be inverted if the driver exceeds the speed limit.
Curve speed reduction1 links with the cruise control settings and works to reduce vehicle speed when the cameras detect an upcoming bend in the road and will adjust the RZ's speed to suit.
A camera placed below the multi-information display is designed to monitor the driver's state and if it determines the driver is distracted - such as looking away from the road ahead - it will issue an audible and visual prompt to pay attention.1
The driver monitor camera can also use facial recognition to load customised vehicle settings and driver preferences.
Lane departure alert1 is synced with the radar cruise control system to provide audible warnings and partial steering assistance if the vehicle begins to stray from its lane.
Lane tracing assist1 is designed to keep the vehicle centred in its lane, and can be offset to the evasive side of the lane when passing adjacent vehicles, roadside construction and the like to mirror natural driving operation.
The system can recognise obstacles such as utility poles, dividers, guard rails and walls, and the lane departure prevention function will not activate if it deems the driver is performing an evasive manoeuvre.
An emergency driving stop system1 is included in the event of an emergency where the driver suddenly becomes unable to operate the vehicle, whereby the vehicle can be slowed to a gradual stop while flashing the hazard lights and unlocking the doors once the vehicle has stopped.
Emergency driving stop system is linked to the driver monitor1, and only works if the dynamic radar cruise control and lane tracing assist functions are activated.
Parking support brake1 is designed to detect obstacles surrounding the vehicle, vehicles approaching from the rear and rear pedestrians, and apply brake force where required.
Not just working in front of and behind the vehicle, parking support brake can assist in situations such as when turning out of a tight car park, where the side of the vehicle may be at risk of collision due to the different path of travel between the front and rear wheels.
Rear cross traffic alert1 ensures the driver is warned of vehicles or pedestrians approaching from the side when reversing out of a car park, showing the direction of approach on the reversing camera.
Drive-start control1 helps to prevent abrupt acceleration when operating the shift lever by suppressing accelerator input if the pedal is depressed while shifting from park to drive, while also issuing a warning in the multi-information display.
The RZ's standard panoramic view monitor1 is linked with the pre collision and parking support brake systems, using cameras in front, behind and alongside the vehicle to provide clear images of the vehicle's surrounds.
Panoramic view monitor also offers an underfloor see-through view and side clearance view to ensure the driver is made fully aware of their surroundings.
The RZ's cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors help to inform the Lexus advanced parking system which is designed to help autonomously perform parking manoeuvres and exit parking spaces for both 90-degree and parallel parking1.
The system controls the vehicle's acceleration, braking and steering inputs, while the suite of cameras can be used for a memory function where up to three parking spaces can be scanned and saved, such as at home or work for easy automatic parking.
Memory function allows the driver to register the direction of approach for the parking space and type of park, and even the parking position within the space can be finely adjusted.
The blind spot monitor1 function uses a quasi-millimetre wave radar which can sense vehicles up to 70 metres rearward in the adjacent lane.
When exiting the vehicle, the RZ offers the safe exit assist feature1 which works with the blind spot monitor to help to mitigate impacts with bicycles and other road users.
If the handle of the e-Latch door system is pressed in a situation where there is the possibility of a collision with an approaching vehicle, audible warnings and flashing indicators on the outer mirror and multi-information display will appear to alert the occupant.
If there is a high possibility of collision, safe exit assist can cancel the operation of the e-Latch. This can be overridden by the occupant by rapidly pressing the inside door latch three times, or by holding the button down for a set time.
Sports Luxury grades come equipped with the adaptive high-beam system (AHS)1 which uses an integrated projector consisting of 12 independent LED chips that work to selectively and precisely blank out the road ahead.2
The ECU built into the headlamps checks environmental information from the monocular camera sensor, vehicle speed and yaw sensors to activate and deactivate the 12 high-beam sensors to prevent dazzling other road users.
A range of AHS modes are available based on vehicle speed, beginning with start-off mode which activates the left and right cornering lamps to illuminate the area around the car, helping to make pedestrians easier to see. Start-off mode activates between speeds of three to 15km/h.
Urban mode works from 15-30km/h and offers the widest possible frontward field of vision, with brightness dimmed for the road shoulder and footpath to avoid dazzling pedestrians.
From 30-80km/h normal mode is activated, which narrows the spread of light slightly while enhancing visibility distance with a stronger concentration of light towards the centre.
At 80km/h and over, high speed mode further narrows the field of light with an excellent depth of view ideal for night-time country driving.
An extra rain mode activates during normal and high-speed modes when it is raining outside, and reduces the central field of light to better identify preceding and oncoming vehicles in low-visibility conditions.
Luxury grades come equipped with automatic high beam, which will disengage the high beams if it detects another vehicle in its field of vision.
The RZ comes as standard with a comprehensive set of 10 SRS airbags, ensuring excellent occupant protection.
The body of the RZ has been designed for safe impact absorbing ability, with beams installed across the doors to distribute and impact load on the doors to both the front and rear pillars.
Quarter lock pillars have also been added to prevent crushing of the wheelhouse in the event of a collision.
