UPGRADED LEXUS UX 300e ARRIVES IN AUSTRALIA WITH INCREASED DRIVING RANGE, IMPROVED MULTIMEDIA

The latest version of the first-ever battery-electric vehicle from Lexus, the UX 300e small SUV, has arrived in Australian showrooms with significant upgrades including a larger lithium-ion battery pack to improve driving range and performance.

First launched in Australia in October 2021, the flagship of the UX range garnered praise for its engaging driving dynamics, Takumi craftsmanship and industry-leading Lexus Encore ownership package.

The UX 300e now returns with a larger 72.8kWh battery - a 34 per cent increase in capacity - which has in turn greatly increased driving range by 200km.1

Lexus Australia Chief Executive John Pappas said the new UX 300e underlined the Lexus commitment to bring the latest technology and enhanced usership benefits to customers.

"The UX 300e holds a special vehicle for Lexus as our first BEV, which in itself represented a significant milestone in the Lexus Electrified journey," Mr Pappas said.

"The upgrades to our flagship small SUV now complete the UX 300 range; with a choice of the latest electric, hybrid and petrol powertrains to suit the diverse needs of our customers."

The UX 300e starts below $80,000, with the Luxury grade arriving in Australia priced from $79,990 plus on-road costs2.

UX 300e Luxury customers may now benefit fringe benefit tax (FBT) exemptions under the Federal Government's Luxury Car Tax threshold,3 strengthening an already appealing ownership package.

The flagship UX 300e Sports Luxury further enhances the level of comfort and refinement and is priced from $88,490 plus on-road costs2.

All UX 300e owners receive complimentary Lexus Encore Platinum Electrified4 benefits including complimentary home charger installation5, access to the Chargefox rapid public charging network6, Lexus On Demand7 and Valet Parking8 at participating shopping centres.

Inside, the UX 300e gains the same technology upgrades applied recently to the UX 200 and UX 250h range, with the addition of an expansive 12.3-inch touchscreen display running the latest Lexus multimedia system.

The new infotainment system is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay®9 and wired Android Auto™10, DAB+ digital radio11, satellite navigation12, wireless phone charger13 and a hi-fi Mark Levinson®14 premium audio system.

Among the upgrades is a three-year subscription to Lexus Connected Services15, increasing safety and peace of mind for customers by using a Data Communication Module built into the car.

Along with features including SOS Emergency Call, Automatic Collision Notification and Stolen Vehicle Tracking, owners can also access a broad range of diagnostic information and remote access through the Lexus Connected smartphone app.

The UX 300e Luxury is generously appointed with features including dual-zone climate control, washi instrument panel stitching, heated and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel and rear outboard seats, NuLuxe synthetic leather upholstery, 17-inch alloys wheels, LED headlamps with static auto-levelling and a full suite of Lexus Safety System + technologies.

The flagship Sports Luxury takes comfort and amenity to a new level with leather accented upholstery, moonroof, head up display, panoramic view monitor, adaptive high beam system, high-grade three projector LED head lamps with dynamic auto levelling, acoustic front side glass and uniquely designed 18-inch wheels.

UPGRADED LITHIUM-ION BATTERY PACK ENHANCES RANGE, PRACTICALITY OF UX 300e

Lexus has made the UX 300e urban SUV even more desirable for customers by significantly boosting vehicle range with the fitment of a larger lithium-ion battery pack.

The newly designed battery pack increases capacity by roughly one third from 54.4kWh to 72.8kWh, which in turn significantly extends driving range from 360km to a generous 560km on the NEDC drive cycle1 as required by ADR81/02, and 440km on the WLTP.

Ninety-six large-capacity battery cells are used to provide excellent output, strong energy density and high-capacity retention rate, with engineers seeking to ensure minimal battery degradation even after a decade.

The battery offers a refrigerant air-cooling system designed to provide a stable output even under high loads such as high-speed cruising and repeated rapid charging, and works in harmony with the air-conditioning system to maximise performance and comfort.

In extremely cold temperatures, a battery heating system is designed to provide a stable output and enhances charging speeds for consistent performance.

Peak power and torque of the UX 300e remain unchanged at 150kW of and 300Nm respectively, keeping it the most powerful member of the UX family. Power is delivered to the front wheels via a transaxle incorporating a permanent magnet synchronous motor, power control unit and DC-DC converter.

Charging options include Type 2 AC and CHAdeMO DC fast charging, with a 7kW onboard charger included as standard. When using the onboard charger with a 32A power supply, charging from 10 per cent to full takes approximately 9.5 hours.2

An emergency release lever is added to the AC charging connector lock for improved usability, with a pair of complimentary AC charging cables included as part of the UX 300e package.

Eligible owners also receive complimentary professional installation of an AC wallbox home charger from specialists JetCharge, perfect for charging the UX 300e overnight.3

CHAdeMO DC charging allows for a maximum output of 50kW and can charge the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in around 80 minutes.2

Owners may also set charging times and limits, allowing the UX 300e to be charged during off-peak times or synced to finish charging immediately before a set departure time.

The high-density battery pack is installed under the vehicle's floor, not only providing an extra-low centre of gravity, but also extra structural reinforcement.

Engineers joined the battery pack frame to the floor reinforcement to improve torsional rigidity, while the rear floor cross member and rear end of the battery have also been joined together.

Further structural reinforcements are applied to the UX 300e as part of the comprehensive update, with the addition of 20 spot weld points on the side members, sills and lower back panel.

Extra reinforcement is added to the tailgate, changing the back door reinforcement material from aluminium to steel for improved rigidity.

Hallmark Lexus quietness is enhanced further on the new UX 300e, with engineers installing additional sealing material in the glass run of the front side windows, while the shape of the inner weather strip has been optimised to reduce noise penetration around the side door glass.

The new mechanical changes serve to make the UX 300e even more desirable than before, furthering the Lexus Electrified Vision with customer-focused improvements and upgrades.

ENHANCED MULTIMEDIA SYSTEM, EXPANDED CONNECTED SERVICES FURTHER IMPROVES USER EXPERIENCE

The latest multimedia system and Lexus Connected Services1 offerings are introduced on the updated UX 300e, enhancing the ownership experience for customers.

Boosting both usability and convenience, the existing 10.3-inch multimedia screen offered across the UX 300e range is replaced by a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen housing the latest-generation Lexus infotainment system.

The new multimedia set-up removes the existing touchpad with all functions now contained in the screen and its surroundings, supported by an intuitive multimedia system layout reminiscent of a smartphone.

Critical menu shortcuts are found on the side of the screen, with an ergonomic layout offering ‘list’ and ‘info’ segments for simple readability.

A sole volume dial with an on/off button supports the touchscreen operation, while the screen itself has been moved 143mm forward for easy touch-capacitive use.

The new system supports dynamic voice recognition activated by simply saying “Hey Lexus”, which allows users to set functions such as the climate control and window operation without touching any buttons.

It also supports wireless Apple CarPlay®2 and wired Android Auto™3 for enhanced convenience.

The inbuilt satellite navigation4 system user interface is upgraded, with cloud-based navigation conveniently allowing users to view real-time traffic, weather and parking information.

Functionality is enhanced further with the addition of two USB-C ports in the centre console, paired with a 12V socket and USB-A port inside the console storage box. The existing auxiliary port has been deleted.

The new multimedia system allows users to set three different profiles tailoring audio and multimedia settings to their own preference.

As before, the multimedia system is paired with a high-definition 13-speaker Mark Levinson®5 Premium Surround Sound System, capable of high-resolution playback from sources containing more information than a CD.

Luxury variants now gain an extra touch of Takumi craftsmanship with the addition of Washi paper instrument panel ornamentation, based on the traditional Japanese paper technique used for a vast range of purposes including origami and shoji doors.

Washi is applied to the upper dashboard of the UX 300e with a black finish applied for a sporty and subtle look.

Sports Luxury variants add the high-grade Kashoku garnish to the interior door trims, while the perforated leather seats have a adopted a stylish new Kagome perforation pattern reminiscent of traditional Japanese basket weaving patterns.

Along with the upgrade in multimedia, convenience is improved with additional upgrades to the UX’s Connected Services functionality, including the Remote Connect and Status Connect features accessed through the Lexus Connected smartphone app6.

Using an inbuilt data communication module (DCM), Status Connect allows owners to remotely access a range of vehicle information including remaining charge and driving range, odometer readings, the vehicle’s last known location and recent trip details.

Owners may also remotely check whether the doors, windows, boot and hood are opened or closed, whether the car is locked or unlocked and tyre pressures. Notifications may also be sent via the app to alert the owner has left any doors or windows open, or if the hazard lights are left on.

The system may even calibrate acceleration, braking and cornering force to rate driving performance with an overall score out of 100.

The Remote Connect feature allows users to remotely start the vehicle, turn on the air-conditioning and hazard lights, and lock/unlock the doors, all via their smartphone.

Charging schedules, battery information and charging station searches are all available with Remote Connect.

The smartphone-linked Connected Services features are in addition to Automatic Collision Notification7, which will notify emergency services if the vehicle detects a collision has happened or if the airbags are deployed.

SOS Emergency Call8 allows users to manually contact a Lexus emergency call centre at the push of a button, while Stolen Vehicle Tracking9 can be used by authorities to help recover the vehicle in the event it is stolen.

Occupant safety is enhanced further on the UX 300e with the Lexus Safety Sense+10 suite expanded to include new features, starting with the Pre Collision System which now includes intersection turning assist.

Intersection turning assist helps the driver by providing warnings and automatic braking assistance when turning at intersections, with the system designed to detect oncoming vehicles or pedestrians crossing the road front the opposite direction when turning at an intersection.

Emergency steering assist is designed to support the driver when performing an evasive steering manoeuvre, providing additional steering torque while ensuring vehicle stability and preventing lane departure.10

Emergency steering assist detects vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists on the side of the road during the daytime, contributing to improved safety conditions for all road users.

The functionality of the dynamic radar cruise control system is expanded further with the addition of curve speed reduction, which is designed to suppress vehicle speed if the system determines so.10

When entering a corner with cruise control activated, the system may reduce vehicle speed to safely navigate the corner. Users may set curve speed reduction to either ‘weak’ or ‘strong’ settings in the multi-information display.

Parking is made easier with expanded functionality for the panoramic view monitor, which now includes an underfloor view to give a truly comprehensive look at the car’s surroundings.

The underfloor view uses the suite of cameras placed around the vehicle to generate an image of the ground beneath the vehicle, helping to detect any obstructions out of the driver’s field of view.
The addition of welcome connectivity and safety upgrades serve to make the UX 300e even more desirable than before.
