2016 Lexus IS Line Press Kit



Lexus has celebrated one million global sales of its IS sports sedan by launching model upgrades in styling, safety and driving experience.

Many of the design features have been imported from the recently released Lexus RC sports coupe, effectively creating a four-door version of the highly acclaimed coupe.

The new IS models are expected to assist Lexus achieve a new all-time sales record in Australia of more than 9,000 deliveries.

The substantial improvements are across the board of the three Lexus IS models, each available in three grades with enhancement packages to help owners personalise their vehicles.

Lexus Australia chief executive Peter McGregor said the upgrades brought new levels of driver engagement, styling, luxury and convenience.

"Every improvement on the new Lexus IS Line has been made with the aim of enhancing the owner, driver and occupant experience," Mr McGregor said.

"It is a typically thoughtful response to the requirement of continual improvement in everything Lexus undertakes."

The Lexus IS Line has established a strong reputation in Australia over four generations because of its trend-setting design.

More than 40,000 Lexus IS Line vehicles have been delivered in Australia since inception, making it the most in-demand of all Lexus model ranges.

The new Lexus models feature eight exterior styling changes and 15 within the cockpit as well as major improvements to the display audio screen and the renowned Lexus sound system.

Most importantly, the IS Line now incorporates the complete suite of the Lexus Safety System+ technology designed to provide maximum driver control, especially in critical situations.

The Lexus IS Line is available as the IS 200t with the recently launched two-litre turbo motor, IS 350 using a 3.5-litre quad cam V6 and as the 300h petrol-electric hybrid.

All three variants are available in Luxury, F Sport and Sports Luxury grades with varying degrees of specification according to owner requirement.

The petrol IS line-up mirrors that of the RC Line to create a spectacular range of choice for intending Lexus owners.

The new IS Line has a new bumper design and a totally repackaged lighting design that substantially increases night-time visibility and day-time recognition.

Lexus IS Luxury and Sports Luxury grades benefit from totally new wheel designs.

The distinctive Lexus spindle grille, a hallmark feature of all Lexus models, has further evolved to give the front of the IS an even more aggressive stance.

Inside, occupants are provided with an enhanced feeling of an exclusive cockpit.

New trim colours and combinations and longitudinal stitching across the cockpit facias enhance an already acclaimed sports interior.

A standout feature is the new 10.3-inch display audio screen, available to both driver and passengers, replacing the previous seven-inch unit in the centre dashboard.

The IS Line has substantially new instrument gauges that incorporate a non-lineal scale beneath 100km/h on the speedometer to provide easy driver recognition.

Steering wheel control buttons identical to the Lexus RC Line make for more precise control.

The Lexus Safety System+ package introduces a sophisticated Pre-Collision System to a suite of electronic control mechanisms including Lane Departure Warning+.

Increases in recommend retail prices are contained below $900 and are more than offset by increased levels of specification.

The price span of the Lexus IS Line is from $59,340# for the IS 200t Luxury up to $84,160# for the IS 350 Sports Luxury.

Taking into account the six models of the RC Line, Lexus now has 15 variants of the IS and RC Lines across a price band of less than $30,000.

More than one million Lexus IS Line vehicles have been sold globally since inception.

The IS Line has consistently defined innovation in the marque.

The first Lexus IS was launched in Australia in June 1999 and owed its beginnings to the passion of engineer and motorsport enthusiast Nobuaki Katayama.

The two-litre sports sedan was a reflection of his personality and interests, and he drove the project from concept to reality.

Mr Katayama chose a front engine/rear drive design with short overhangs and a low polar moment of inertia to ensure premium handling.

IS 200 combined a bespoke, highly rigid body and four-wheel independent suspension from the GS 300 sports sedan

Its two-litre DOHC straight-six engine delivered 112kW and featured variable valve timing and acoustic-controlled induction. Transmission choice was six-speed manual or four-speed automatic.

IS 200 maintained the hallmark Lexus features of optimum comfort, high specification and feature levels as standard equipment, and low NVH (noise, vibration and harshness).

The vehicle was designed in Japan, with major input from Lexus in Europe and an extensive European test program.

Prototype testing included the famed 22-kilometre Nürburgring Nordschleife, as well as German autobahns and twisting secondary roads in the south of France.

The tradition of Lexus testing at Nürburgring continues to this day.

Two prototype evaluations were conducted in Australia, with Mr Katayama saying he valued Australian roads for the feedback they provide to suspension development.

Lexus IS 200 reset benchmarks for body rigidity in a Lexus vehicle.

Active safety equipment included ABS anti-skid brakes with an Australian-developed gravel road strategy, traction control and a snow mode for throttle control in poor traction conditions.

In August 2001 Lexus Australia boosted the IS Line with the three-litre IS 300.

Power came from the VVT-i-equipped 3.0-litre straight-six engine shared with the GS 300, matched to a five-speed automatic transmission with E-shift.

It delivered 157kW of power at 5800rpm and 288Nm of torque at 3800rpm.

Standard equipment for Australia included vehicle stability control, leather-accented seat facings, self-levelling high intensity discharge headlamps, 17-inch polished aluminium wheels, moonroof, rear spoiler, foglamps and glare-resistant electrochromatic mirrors.

Satellite navigation was optionally available.

Full model change - IS 250
Lexus IS Line underwent a full model change in 2005, with quad cam V6 IS 250.

The IS 250 was a wheels-up redevelopment with a new chassis, styling, engine and drivetrain and a complete commitment to Lexus' quality covenant.

It replaced both the IS 200 and IS 300 models, with the new all-alloy direct-injection V6 engine delivering 153kW of power and 252Nm of torque through the choice of six-speed manual or sequential-shift automatic transmissions.

It was more fuel efficient than the 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre engines it replaced.

Multi-link rear suspension featured on IS for the first time.

The IS 250 introduced 13 world-first technologies, including the world's first twin-chamber front passenger SRS airbag.

It also established global firsts in electronics, active safety and noise attenuation.

It was offered with the Lexus Pre Collision Safety System (PCS), Active Cruise Control (ACC) and adaptive headlamps.

First Lexus Performance Vehicle - IS F
Lexus launched its first dedicated performance vehicle in Australia in November 2008.

Like IS 200, the 311kW IS F resulted from the efforts and determination of one man. This time it was chief engineer Yukihiko Yaguchi.

Based on the popular IS platform, the IS F underwent extensive re-engineering and a development program befitting a vehicle of its performance attributes.

IS F was also the first Lexus vehicle to bear the marque's performance designation 'F', derived in name and design from Japan's Fuji Speedway, the home of Lexus performance vehicle development.

Benefitting from the most intensive track development program of any Lexus to date, the thrilling four-door vehicle brought a new level of driving dynamics and performance to the Lexus range.

IS F featured many performance-tuned components, including a 5.0-litre V8 engine co-developed with Yamaha, Brembo brakes and the world's first eight-speed Sports Direct Shift transmission.

The new SDS gearbox could change gears in 0.1 seconds, a mere 0.05 seconds slower than gear changes in a Formula One car of the same era.

Safety technology included switchable Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management (VDIM).

IS goes convertible - IS 250C
Lexus launched its first body variant of the IS Line in July 2009, with the hard-top convertible IS 250C.

It featured an in-house designed three-piece electrically powered metal folding roof that transformed the vehicle from a coupe to convertible in just 20 seconds.

Dynamically, IS 250C was designed to combine the driving performance traits of a sedan with the open air enjoyment of a convertible.

Body engineering lessons from the IS 250C would later be used in developing the RC coupe.

The vehicle was extensively tested in harsh Australian conditions.

Four-seat IS 250C used the proven Lexus quad cam V6 engine and six-speed sequential transmission.

Dual injection V6 - IS 350
Lexus Australia further enhanced the IS Line in October 2010 when it launched the IS 350.

The quad cam 3.5-litre IS 350 featured dual injection (direct and port), delivering 233kW of power (more than double that of the IS 200) and 378Nm of torque though an eight-speed Sports Direct Shift transmission.

At launch, IS 350 had a specific power output of 67.4kW per litre, the highest among its naturally aspirated competitors, and the highest of a petrol engine in the Lexus range.

The launch of IS 350 coincided with new styling and features available across the IS sedan range, with an aggressive frontal treatment and new wheel and tyre package, along with new safety and comfort refinements.

IS 350 also debuted Lexus' F Sport logo, with F Sport models featuring unique sports-tuned suspension, wheels, spoilers, unique interior and exterior features and F Sport badging.

Third-generation - first hybrid IS
Lexus launched the third IS generation in July 2013, offering its largest model line-up that included F Sport variants across the range and an all-new IS 300h hybrid model.

IS 300h combined a 2.5-litre dual-injection petrol engine and powerful electric motor.

At launch, the IS 300h petrol engine had the highest thermal efficiency of any production engine.

The IS 250 and IS 350 drivelines continued, with IS 250 featuring a six-speed sequential shift transmission and IS 350 having eight-speed direct shift.

The new-generation IS had a longer, wider platform with a 60/40 rear-fold split seat, innovative on-board features and a more rigid body thanks to new Lexus-developed construction techniques, including laser-screw welding.

All new IS models contained segment-rivalling levels of standard equipment, including a new-to-IS pop-up hood, drive mode select, Lexus Remote Touch, tyre pressure warning sensors, eight airbags (since increased to 10), satellite navigation, reversing camera, smart entry and start, and heated and ventilated front seats.

Wheelbase was increased by 70mm, delivering benefits in rear-seat legroom and greater boot space.

A total rear suspension redesign improved both dynamic performance and boot space.

Turbo-petrol arrives - IS 200t
Lexus launched its first turbocharged petrol sedan in September 2015, when IS 200t replaced IS 250.

It was the first longitudinal installation for the Lexus 8AR-FTS engine, increasing power by 27kW compared with the 2.5-litre V6 and torque to 350Nm, while improving fuel economy and emission levels.

IS 200t combined an eight-speed Sports Direct Shift automatic transmission with the 2.0-litre turbo engine for the first time, providing levels of driveability expected of a Lexus compact sports sedan.

IS 200t also introduced Lexus Stop & Start technology to IS, for fuel savings in heavy traffic.

Lexus has raised the specifications of its IS Line, adding safety technology, convenience features and luxury appointments.

The updated IS 200t, IS 300h and IS 350 have new pricing, in keeping with revisions to equipment levels.

All IS vehicles now use the Lexus Safety System+, consisting of Pre-Collision Safety System (PCS), Active Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Departure Warning+ (LDW+) with Sway Warning System (SWS) and Automatic High-Beam (AHB).

All IS models have 10 SRS airbags, eight-head clearance and reversing sonar, rear camera with rear guide assist, heated and power-folding exterior mirrors, daytime running lamps, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, emergency brake lamps, Hill-start Assist Control, paddle shifters on the steering wheel, Lexus Inform~, digital radio+^, LCD multi-information display, Lexus Remote Touch controller, satellite navigation with SUNA™# traffic alerts, heated and ventilated front seats, voice-control multi-media system, pop-up bonnet and Tyre-Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

IS 200t - Luxury, F Sport and Sports Luxury
The IS Line begins with the two-litre turbocharged IS 200t, priced from $59,340* for Luxury grade.

The turbo-petrol engine is matched to an eight-speed Sports Direct Shift transmission.

IS 200t also has the fuel-saving Lexus Stop & Start system.

A front performance damper is standard equipment on IS 200t, as are power-adjustable front seats and steering column.

New features in the model include 10.3-inch multimedia screen, 10-speaker audio system, new design Bi-LED headlamps, new design bright-finish 17-inch alloy wheels and dual trapezoidal exhaust tips.

The Luxury grade is available with an optional $2,500 enhancement pack that includes a moon roof.

The F Sport grade adds safety, styling and performance upgrades that include Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), sports suspension calibration, four-mode Lexus Drive Mode Select, sports pedals, high-friction front brake pads, new '3L' LED headlamps, Dark Premium Metallic finish 18-inch alloy wheels, sports front seats, unique instrumentation, new Naguri-style aluminium ornamentation, Smart Key Card, driver's seat and exterior mirror memory functions, and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

IS 300h - Luxury, F Sport and Sports Luxury
The IS 300h has a fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain and luxury features.

It has an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission with sequential-shift feature, electric vehicle (EV) mode, run-flat tyres in lieu of temporary spare wheel, switchable tacho/HV meter and acceleration sound control.

Entry-level IS 300h Luxury retails for $61,890* and comes with the same comfort, convenience and luxury features as IS 200t.

An enhancement pack adds a moon roof for $2,500*.

IS 300h F Sport adds adaptive variable suspension (AVS), sports suspension, four-setting Drive Mode Select, sports pedals, high-friction front brake pads, 18-inch alloy wheels, sports front seats and unique instrumentation, and retails for $70,310*.

IS 350 - Luxury, F Sport and Sports Luxury
The highest performing IS in the line-up, IS 350 features a 233kW quad cam 3.5-litre V6 engine and eight-speed Sports Direct Shift transmission.

All IS 350 models have a front performance damper.

The Lexus performance damper is designed to increase agility, stability and ride comfort, as well as driving quality while reducing NVH (noise, vibration and harshness).

It has a precisely machined shock absorber unit in place of the traditional reinforcing strut brace.

The gas-pressurised damper is machined with a high degree of accuracy to dampen miniscule - in fact micron-sized - vibrations in the body.

Uniquely in the IS Line, IS 350 F Sport and Sports Luxury have variable gear ratio steering.

The quad cam model range begins with IS 350 Luxury at $65,390*, including newly designed 17-inch alloy wheels.

An enhancement pack adds moon roof for $2,500*.

The Lexus IS Line has three powerplants, including turbocharged petrol and petrol-electric hybrid.

The flagship engine is the 3.5-litre quad cam dual-injection 2GR-FSE V6, delivering 233kW of power at 6400rpm and 378Nm of torque at 4800rpm.

Last year Lexus introduced its innovative turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol 8AR-FTS engine to the IS Line, the first time Lexus has offered a turbocharged-petrol sedan.

The quad cam V6 and turbo engines are both matched to the Lexus AA81E eight-speed sequential-shift Sports Direct Shift transmission.

The 8AR-FTS engine is crammed with cutting-edge technology and can operate on both the fuel-saving Atkinson and conventional Otto cycles.

The Euro 5-compliant turbocharged engine delivers 180kW of power at 5800rpm and 350Nm of torque from 1650 to 4400rpm.

It has official ADR 82/01 combined cycle fuel economy of 7.5 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 175g/km*.

The IS 300h hybrid drivetrain combines a 2.5-litre dual-injection twin cam petrol engine and a powerful electric motor.

It has an exclusive electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (E-CVT) with sequential shift-matic six-step control via paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

IS 300h's longitudinally mounted four-cylinder 2AR-FSE engine has 133kW of power at 6000rpm and 221Nm of torque from 4200 to 5400rpm.

It operates in concert with a 650-volt permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor, producing 105kW maximum power and 300Nm maximum torque.

IS 300h produces just 113 grams of CO2 per kilometre and consumes just 4.9 litres of fuel per 100km*, with a combined power output of 164kW from its petrol-electric drivetrain.

IS 200t and IS 350 have a towing capacity of 1500kg#.

Combined-cycle fuel economy for IS 350 is 9.7 litres/100km with CO2 emissions of 225g/km*.

Lexus IS 200t and IS 350 both have an eight-speed sequential-shift Sports Direct Shift transmission.

The Lexus AA81E transmission has been proven in the IS, RC and GS Lines.

The latest iteration, introduced in September 2015 in IS 200t, has added electronic-control technology, including Lexus-first Downshift Lock-up Control.

Cutting-edge control features include auto-blip downshifts in IS 350 for added driver involvement.

In IS 200t a special electro-magnetic oil pump maintains transmission oil pressure when the Stop & Start system is in operation.

Hybrid IS 300h has the all-gear L210 electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, developed exclusively for the 2.5-litre 2AR-FSE engine in a FR layout.

The Lexus AA81E transmission provides a balance of linear acceleration, optimum fuel economy and driveability under all conditions, and smooth shift feel.

The torque converter has a long-travel 'swing' damper to boost fuel economy and reduce NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) during lock-up, with lock-up available in all gears from third to eighth.

The AA81E transmission can be used in D (automatic) or M mode, which has full torque-converter lock-up from second to eighth gears for 'clutchless' manual shifting. Down changes in M mode are made in just 0.2 of a second. In addition, the IS 200t and IS 350 transmission is linked to the Lexus Drive Mode Select function.

A key sports-driving feature is G-sensor AI-Shift Control, which uses information from the vehicle's G-sensor on driving status to provide the optimal gear ratio for performance driving.

The system selects the suitable gear for sporting driving by monitoring the status of the vehicle's G-sensor, with shifting selection biased towards the lower gears to draw out the full potential of the engine.

The transmission uses G-sensor information to automatically downshift during hard braking to set up for a corner, hold a lower gear through the corner for greater control, and then give the driver a greater power response on corner exit by selecting a suitably low gear.

The Lexus transmission software monitors throttle opening to provide the acceleration the driver requires.

It can initiate a quick downshift depending on throttle position to ensure responsive re-acceleration out of a corner or a quick upshift to maintain momentum.

The latest AA81E iteration has Uphill Downshift Control. When driving uphill, the system ensures optimum driveability by implementing downshift based on inclination information.

It also has Lexus Downshift Lock-up Control to maintain lock-up when downshifting and ensure a direct feel or connection in relation to throttle pedal operation.

Maintaining lock-up during downshifts also boosts fuel economy.

Deceleration Flex Lock-Up Control activates when the driver is off the throttle, to maintain a minute level of slippage in the lock-up clutch. As a result, the transmission control selects the suitable gear step-down in accordance with auxiliary load, improving fuel economy and providing suitable deceleration.

Power Saving Control works in accordance with driving conditions, controlling the level of electric power used by the solenoids that control the transmission clutches and brakes. It reduces the load on the vehicle's alternator which saves fuel.

Stop & Start Control is an idling-stop function that saves fuel by switching the engine off when the vehicle comes to a complete halt.

An electro-magnetic oil pump (EMOP) operates when the engine is stopped, to maintain automatic transmission oil pressure and ensure smooth take-off when the engine restarts.

E-CVT in IS 300h
The two power sources in IS 300h are linked through the Lexus L210 E-CVT transmission, which then drives the 2.473:1 ratio rear axle.

Paddle shifter-activated sequential shift-matic six-step control increases driver involvement.

The IS 300h transmission also has a kick-down switch to maximise drive power according to the driver's intended accelerator timing.

When accelerating without kick-down switch activation the engine speed and drive power rise in a linear curve according to accelerator operation.

Applying a high accelerator pedal angle with the kick-down switch in operation increases engine speed and enhances drive-power responsiveness for optimum acceleration performance.

Key features of the L210 transmission include a two-stage electric motor speed reduction device and an all-gear drive to save fuel by eliminating slippage.

The transmission software has been designed to provide a more natural driving feel through a linear rise in petrol engine revolutions as the vehicle accelerates.

The L210 transmission contains two sets of planetary gears, two electric motors/generators mounted end-to-end in line with the vehicle tail shaft (MG1 and MG2), a hydraulic control system for the planetary gears, an oil pump to generate hydraulic pressure when the petrol engine is stopped, and a cooling system for the electric motors.

The component layout (beginning with the input shaft and working rearward) is a damper to reduce NVH, MG1, the first set of planetary gears, MG2, the second set of planetary gears, and finally the output shaft.

MG1 acts mainly as a generator and also as the starter motor for the petrol engine.

MG2 is primarily the electric drive motor, but also acts as a generator during regenerative braking.

The first planetary gear set acts as a power-split device to divide petrol-engine power between driving the rear wheels and MG1.

The second planetary gear set acts as a two-stage motor speed reduction device, allowing a reduction in the size of the electric-drive motor while still achieving impressive initial acceleration.

Together, the planetary gear sets act as the electronically controlled transmission, providing infinitely variable ratios according to vehicle operating conditions.

The IS Line chassis contains leading-edge Lexus-developed design features and manufacturing techniques to optimise rigidity and sharpen steering and suspension control for an enjoyable driving experience.

The highly rigid body contributes to optimum handling by providing a stable platform for the double wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension.

It also contributes to crashworthiness and durability; Lexus IS Line has achieved a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

All IS 200t and IS 350 models have the added feature of a front performance damper, between the left and right underfloor braces, to optimise steering and handling response, and reduce NVH (noise, vibration and harshness).

The IS body shell features cutting-edge production technologies, including body adhesive and laser screw welding, which produce stronger bonding by joining a larger panel area than traditional spot welding.

More than 25 metres of body adhesive is used to join entire areas of the body shell - creating a stronger bond between panel surfaces than spot welding, enhancing body rigidity and vibration-damping characteristics.

Lexus IS's underbody reinforcements run the length of the vehicle, from the radiator support.

Three grades of high-tensile strength steel sheet are used: 980, 590 and 440MPa.

Hot-stamp high-tensile strength steel sheet is used for the centre pillar outer reinforcement of the side member.

The bonnet is made of aluminium to reduce weight.

F Sport and Sports Luxury models have Lexus Adaptive Variable Suspension to vary damping force according to road conditions and driver intent.

The SPORT S+ mode on F Sport and Sports Luxury models modifies the steering and damping control for a more sporting drive.

IS Line vehicles have new suspension calibrations, with revised coil-spring and damper rates and revised upper suspension support characteristics front and rear for optimum ride comfort.

The Lexus IS Line has the choice of two suspension systems, including active dampers on F Sport and Sports Luxury models.

The Lexus Active Variable Suspension (AVS) is linked to the IS Line's Drive Mode Select feature.

The latest iteration Lexus AVS represents state-of-the-art chassis electronics, with one controller for damping force on all four wheels.

It operates in conjunction the Lexus Pre-Crash Safety System.

Flagship IS 350 F Sport and Sports Luxury grades have the added feature of Variable Gear Ratio Steering.

All IS Line models have rack and pinion steering with electronically controlled power assistance and electronically controlled braking.

Lexus IS has double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link suspension at the rear.

In this new model front and rear stabiliser-bar characteristics have been revised to optimise roll stiffness.

The front suspension has a new aluminium lower arm and optimised lower arm number-one bushing to enhance rigidity and yaw response during steering.

The rear suspension upper number-one bushing has new material with low dynamic stiffness and high damping capacity, to enhance handling stability and ride comfort.

Lexus designed the IS front suspension and steering hardware to optimise yaw response during steering, steering feel, steering response and stability during emergency manoeuvres, and ride comfort, while minimising roll during cornering.

The rear suspension design features separate coil springs and dampers to optimise damper efficiency and increase comfort.

Separating the springs and dampers also optimises the pitch between rear-suspension towers to maximise boot capacity.

The IS Line suspension makes extensive use of forged aluminium components to minimise unsprung weight, including the front steering knuckle and the majority of the multi-link rear-suspension arms.

The IS Line tyre and wheel packages are grade-dependent, with a front-rear tyre-size differential for F Sport and Sports Luxury models.

Circuit-bred steering
Lexus used major race circuits across the world for IS Line steering development.

Engineers carried out fine-tuning at Germany's famed Nürburgring and Japan's Autopolis, Fuji Speedway, Sportsland SUGO and Soegaura Forest Raceway.

This played an integral part in developing a lighter, smoother and more accurate steering feel with enhanced response to input and greater driver feedback.

The Lexus Electric Power Steering (EPS) system's assist characteristics were refined to deliver dynamic performance and steering feel, particularly when SPORT and SPORT+ modes are engaged via Drive Mode Select.

In addition to aiding dynamic performance, the EPS is designed to boost day-to-day driving convenience.

It uses an electric motor and reduction gear mounted on the steering-gear housing to generate torque when the steering wheel is turned, for low steering effort at parking speeds.

Variable Gear Ratio Steering is fitted to IS 350 F Sport and Sports Luxury models.

The system, which uses an actuator governed by a dedicated ECU, controls the steering ratio according to the vehicle speed and steering operation.

It has three key benefits:

• fewer turns of the steering wheel are needed to achieve maximum wheel turning angle at very low speeds (parking or making a U-turn), thereby reducing driver effort
• light, easy-to-handle steering at moderate speeds (for urban driving or winding roads), and
• firm steering feel and reduced turns lock-to-lock for optimum control at higher speeds.

The actuator has a rubber damper to reduce noise, as well as a mechanism that locks the actuator to prevent the motor from rotating when the engine is not running (or in the unlikely event of malfunction).

All other IS models have an intermediate shaft in the steering to absorb shaft-length changes when driving and provide a smoother steering feel.

Focus on braking control
All IS Line models have electronically controlled brakes.

The design goals for the brake system were optimum controllability, effectiveness, response and cooling.

Hybrid IS 300h has a bespoke brake master cylinder and stroke simulator that employs LFA development technology to fine-tune the brake pedal feel.

The LFA-inspired design optimises the hydraulic path and the performance of the multi-stage spring in the stroke simulator.

Special attention was paid to the design of the IS Line front-brake cooling ducts, to optimise brake cooling.

Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS)
IS Line F Sport and Sports Luxury grades have Adaptive Variable Suspension which electronically controls and monitors all four dampers simultaneously to suit certain conditions and driving preferences.

It aids ride comfort when driving on rough roads by lowering the damping force, but can also deliver a sporting drive with greater response and handling stability by increasing the damping force when SPORT S+ mode is engaged via Drive Mode Select.

AVS also interacts with the Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management (VDIM) and Pre-Collision Safety System (PCS) to optimise damper rates and prepare the vehicle during potentially hazardous driving situations*.

For example, AVS will increase front damper force to prevent dive during emergency braking.

It also monitors steering operations and road conditions and adjusts the dampers to suit, monitoring inputs on vehicle posture, including roll, dive and squat.

AVS provides distinct advantages in the following conditions:

Rough surfaces
Switches to a lower damping force (oil moves through the damper valves quickly) to help absorb vibrations for a smoother ride.

Heavy braking or hard acceleration
Damping force is increased (less oil is allowed to move through the damper valves) for ideal vehicle composure when the vehicle pitches forward or back.

Anti-Dive Control can predict the vehicle will pitch forward based on the stop-lamp switch signal and increase damping force to control dive. Similarly, by monitoring torque output Anti-Squat Control can ensure early AVS reaction to maintain ride comfort and handling stability.

Damping force is increased to ensure exceptional handling and reduced body roll through the turn, creating a feeling of unity flowing from natural and smooth vehicle movements while providing a more comfortable ride.

Tyre-size differential
The Lexus IS Line features a range of tyre and wheel packages.

Handling-focused F Sport and Sports Luxury models have 18-inch diameter wheels and a front/rear tyre-size differential, with 225/40R18 tyres at the front and 255/35R18 at the rear.

Luxury grade models have 225/45R17 tyres at the front and rear.

'Aggressive Sports' is the IS model-change design theme, with the exterior refined to further reinforce the strong and athletic characteristics of IS.

A new front bumper design has increased vehicle length by 15mm.

Eight exterior items have been changed: front bumper and grille, headlamps on all grades, daytime running lamps, rear combination lamps, rear bumper lowered on petrol and hybrid models, muffler tips on IS 350, and wheels on Luxury grade and IS 350 Sports Luxury.

The three-dimensional sculpted form of the bonnet extends clearly as far as the bumper and the spindle grille has further evolved, with the central pinch point set higher to alter the top-to-bottom ratio of the spindle shape.

The revised grille and trapezoidal bumper corners create a 3-D contrast that conveys a powerful image.

The top section is thinner and tighter, while the bottom section is thicker and wider, conveying a well-planted look and reinforcing the impression of sportiness with a low centre of gravity.

Changing the thickness of the horizontal bars within the grille and the revised edge treatment accentuate the 3-D look.

The bottom edges have a characteristic shape that guides air to the brake ducts and expresses functionality.

IS petrol, IS 300h and F Sport each feature a distinct new lower rear bumper design.

Petrol models have new, more angular cross-section exhaust tips to highlight the evolution to a premium sports sedan.

The bumper lower on hybrid models now has an exclusive bezel with metallic paint, to provide a distinctive and premium look while reinforcing the taut and sporty image.

New colours
There are two new exterior colours: Deep Blue MC is an additional colour while Graphite Black replaces Starlight Black.

IS Line exterior colour choices also include Caliente, Mercury Grey, Onyx, Premium Silver, Sonic Quartz, Titanium and Vermillion.

There are two F Sport-unique colours: Cobalt Mica and White Nova.

New lamps
The IS model change uses new LED headlamps. The lamps now extend inward to bring out their characteristics and enhance continuity with the DRLs while sharpening the headlamp look.

Luxury grade models have a single LED low/high beam headlamp and bulb-type turn-signal lamp.

F Sport and Sports luxury grades have a three-lamp low-beam system and separate LED high-beam lamp as well as LED signal lamps.

The DRLs/clearance lamps are LED on all models.

Automatic High Beam has been adopted on all models as part of the Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+).

The three-lamp low-beam unit fitted to F Sport and Sports Luxury models is arranged in an L-shape, indicative of Lexus' new generation to represent the evolution of the vehicle.

Further reinforcing and evolving the L-shape, IS Line's rear combination lamps have been redesigned with the turn signal lamps moved to the inside to create a wider look.

Layered L-shapes with bold lines create tension to accentuate the firmly planted stance.

A sense of depth has been achieved by utilising three overlain L-shapes.

The tail lamp point light sources that mark out the L-shape on the current model have been replaced by layered L-shapes containing multiple LEDs with brightness and depth.

Adopting LEDs for the tail lamp, stop lamp, turn signal and reversing lamps gives the rear combination lamps a unified appearance when lit and highlights Lexus' progressive image.

It also reduces electric power consumption and boosts fuel economy.

The IS Line rear lamps have aero stabilising fins on the outer lens to help enhance handling stability.

New wheels
IS Line Luxury grade models have new 17-inch alloy wheels, with a dynamically sculpted five by twin-spoke design and bright machine finish to enhance their appearance.

Flagship IS 350 Sports Luxury has new bright machine finish 18-inch five-spoke wheels with a contrast between sharp edges and voluminous surfaces to enhance IS's sense of power.

New bumpers and mouldings
The Lexus IS front end adopts a body-coloured front bumper, chrome-plated grille moulding, a lower moulding with metallic paint and a radiator grille with dark metallic paint.

The headlamp cleaner located under the DRL is now body-coloured.

The front bumper of F Sport is the same specification as the other grades, but for differentiation has exclusive dark metallic paint for the radiator grille, lower grille and side garnish, as well as dark plating for the grille moulding and lower moulding.

Lexus has developed unique new styling for IS Line F Sport models to further reinforce the sense of driving enjoyment.

IS F Sport has a new front grille, bumper-side garnish, rear bumper lower and exclusive badges.

The 18-inch alloy Dark Premium Metallic-finished wheels with five pairs of Y-shaped spokes are exclusive to F Sport.

F Sport's new front styling inherits the 'F' DNA, with the spindle grille adopting jet-black plating and distinctive F mesh.

The latest mesh pattern adopts a design that changes from left to right.

Adopting a bumper side garnish helps express continuity with the brake duct openings at both ends of the grille, while a wide look with low centre of gravity projects the F Sport's sporty image.

The vertical fin to the outside of the side garnish contributes to the F Sport's aerodynamics.

At the rear, F Sport has an exclusive lower-rear bumper, which adopts black F mesh.

It coordinates with the front grille design to further reinforce the image of sporty driving performance.

F Sport has three-lamp L-shaped LED low-beam headlamps, a feature shared with Sports Luxury models.

Lexus has significantly upgraded the IS Line interior as part of the vehicle's MY17 model change.

The original design concept of "elevating design into a work of beauty" has been combined with the overall sense of quality.

Key improvements include enlarging the multimedia display screen from seven to 10.3-inch and enhancing the quality of the console area.

The appearance and tactile feel of the functional components has been enhanced for a sportier image and high sense of quality.

New interior trim colours have been adopted across the model range.

Fifteen interior features have been changed, including the display, meter hood, clock, centre register, driver and front passenger's side registers, knee pads, heater control panel, audio panel, Lexus Remote Touch switches, meters, steering-wheel switches, door-trim base switch, shift-lever knob, inside door handles and ornamentation panels.

Lexus has also improved the user-friendliness of the IS interior.

A customise mode has been added to the Drive Mode Select for F Sport and Sports Luxury grades that is activated by pressing the dial switch, and the Active Cruise Control switch has been simplified to one-step activation with a prolonged (at least one second) press of the main cruise control switch.

The Lexus Remote Touch interface now has an Enter switch on both sides.

The palm rest area has been enlarged and stitching has been added to increase ease of use.

The body of the interior electro-chromatic mirror has been changed to a sharper design.

The front cup-holder shape has been changed for greater ease of use. Connecting the two cup holders provides space for a mug with a handle, and a mobile phone or smartphone (140 x 70 x 10mm) can also be stowed there.

The steering wheel switch design has been changed to the square type used on Lexus RC.

The vehicle start-switch angle has been modified so it is oriented more towards the front of the driver, making it easier to press.

A vibration motor has been adopted for the Lane Departure Warning+ feature, to minimise intrusion of the LDW+ system's warning buzzer.

Product-appeal improvements also include changing the centre console knee pads from plastic to covered cushioning, with stitching on F Sport and Sports Luxury models.

The threading of stitches through the meter hood has been modified to be symmetrical with the driver for a more sporty impression.

A satin-plated ornamentation panel has been added to the gear-shift lever to provide an excellent tactile and quality feel.

The surface treatment of the meter rings has been changed to a combination of chrome and satin plating for a greater sense of luxury.

Contrasting colours have been used for the analogue clock face and indicators to help maintain good visibility.

Spin processing has been used on the dial for a high quality look.

Ornamentation of the centre register and the registers on the driver and passenger's sides has been changed to a horizontally based type, to accentuate a wider look.

The side registers are now the same as those featured on RC to create vehicle alignment and reinforce the sporty image.

The inside door-handle surface treatment has been changed to satin-like to coordinate with the overall interior.

Instrument panel and meters
The IS Line's instrument panel and meter cluster have been redesigned to increase cockpit refinement, sportiness and a sense of luxury.

Black metallic paint has been adopted for the ornamentation at the back of the displays on top of the instrument panel.

The bezel area of the clock has been changed to two-tone silver and black, and a premium panel with stitching has been adopted on top of the meter cluster.

The speedometer and tachometer dials have adopted non-linear scales to help promote a surge in power from low engine speed, and limitless power at higher speeds.

The positions of the display lights and warning lights have been changed for greater clarity.

The content layout of the Multi-Information Display (MID) has also been improved, and the display area for the odometer/trip meter at the bottom of the MID now has a Speed Warning function.

The tab display area at the top of the MID now shows ambient temperature as the default display, with the other displays accessible using the switch on the steering wheel.

IS Line's interior colour line-up has been refreshed to embody a sporty image and sense of luxury.

The range of interior trim options has been expanded to include Nuance Black, Noble Brown and Chateau.

Luxury and Sports Luxury models have the choice of these three new interiors.

Black has been continued as an interior option, contrasting with the silver metallic touches throughout the interior.

Dark Garnet is the accent colour with Nuance Black, while IS joins RX in having the choice of Noble Brown with Ecru accents.

The newly adopted light interior colour is Chateau, combining the fine quality look of ivory with the modern appearance of light grey.

F Sport is available with the choice of Nuance Black, Dark Rose and Black interior.

IS Line interior ornamentation has been revised, with three styles to differentiate the model grades.

Luxury grade has Mercury Mist, with a bright intersecting pattern to highlight sportiness and progressive luxury.

For the first time in IS, F Sport uses Naguri-style aluminium - a genuine aluminium finish that reduces weight while also providing a pure metal quality worthy of the F Sport name and emphasising Lexus' distinctive craftsmanship.

For Sports Luxury grade, laser-cut aluminium wood ornamentation replaces Ebony Brown and Ebony Grey.

It provides a sleek and advanced finish, and has also been introduced in the latest Lexus GS and RX upgrades.

The latest laser-etching technology is used to produce patterns in the wood overlain on the aluminium base, with the bright metal underneath shining through the beautifully cut pattern to create an attractive contrast with the natural features of the wood in the interior.

Fusing the qualities of the two materials creates a Lexus-original ornamentation with a new luxurious finish designed to further heighten Lexus' innovative appeal.

The colour of the overhead lamps and sections of the pillar garnishes have been changed to Ecru.

The air conditioning panel surface treatment has been changed to hairline, for enhanced quality.

Lexus has dramatically increased the display area of IS Line's multimedia display.

A new 10.3-inch wide display replaces the current seven-inch display for navigation, audio and destination information.

Mobile telephone and Lexus Inform# features are also quickly and easily viewed, with a simple-to-use operation section of the screen allocated for phone functions.

The larger screen is linked the improved Lexus Remote Touch controller, with newly adopted Back switch at the front of the switch pad and an Enter switch on the elongated palm rest.

The new screen displays content across its entire width, for greater clarity and user-friendliness.

To further enhance map readability, a new setting removes on-screen operation buttons when they are not in use.

Hands-free telephone calling operations have been simplified by changing the phone TOP screen.

The most recent tab used among Favourites, Call History, Contacts and Dial pad is displayed, while the entry to the MAIL screen has been moved to directly below Info.

The order of automatic connection with Bluetooth®*-compatible devices can be changed according to user preference, and the connection altered with icons on the screen.

The new system can also automatically transfer address book and history data to a mobile telephone^.

Lexus has improved the performance of the Pioneer® speaker system, adding two speakers (total of 10) while also improving the audio function and hands-free functions of the IS Line.

Improvements to the Pioneer audio system include new 9cm tweeter and midrange speakers, and the adoption of an equaliser for the audio amplifier.

IS Line's audio function has been improved by changing the layout of the TOP screen:
- the Track up/down and Fast Forward/Rewind buttons have been integrated
- the Settings and Sound buttons and the display method for the Settings screen have been changed, and
- the location of video images has been changed from the left side to the right.

In addition, externally connected audio-source selection displays have been integrated into an AUX display.

The visual mode is now displayed as External.

The IS hands-free functions have been refined in three ways:
1. the order of automatic connection with Bluetooth®*-compatible devices can be changed as the user wishes
2. connections with a Bluetooth®*-compatible device can be manipulated with icons on the screen, and
3. address book and history data can be automatically transferred to a mobile telephone.

New speakers
IS Luxury and F Sport's Pioneer audio system has been improved with new speakers and amplifier equaliser.

Two new 9cm speakers with Coherent Source Transducer (CST) have been adopted on either side of the instrument panel, to deliver higher-fidelity, higher-quality sound reproduction.

The new 9cm by 2.5cm speakers integrate with new tweeters and the mid-range speaker to act as a point-sound source.

The newly adopted equaliser in the audio amplifier helps produce a sound with a sense of depth.

A 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio system is standard on IS 350 F Sport and can be specified for IS 200t and 300h F Sport models as part of the F Sport Enhancement Pack.

All models in the Lexus IS Line now have Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+).

LSS+ combines four driver-assist systems: Lexus Pre-Collision Safety System (PCS) including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Active Cruise Control (ACC) high-speed (above 40km/h), Lane Departure Warning+ (LDW+) and Automatic High Beam.

Other comprehensive safety features include 10 airbags and the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management package of stability and traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, Brake Assist and ABS.

All models have a reversing camera, Hill-start Assist Control and a Tyre-Pressure Monitoring System. Sport and Sports Luxury variants feature Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

Lexus PCS* has a multi-stage strategy that includes Brake Assist function and autonomous emergency braking.

It can warn the driver of a potential collision, boost braking force when the driver applies the brakes in an emergency and automatically apply the brakes if the driver takes no action.

Pre Collison Brake Assist will operate if the vehicle speed is between approximately 30 and 180km/h and the vehicle stability control can be activated.

Autonomous emergency braking operates when the vehicle speed is between approximately 15 and 180km/h and the relative speed of the other vehicle is more than 10km/h.

On F Sport and Sports Luxury models, the PCS interacts with the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) to maintain appropriate vehicle posture under heavy braking - provided the vehicle speed is between approximately 30 and 180km/h and the relative speed of the other vehicle is more than 30km/h.

Several Lexus LSS+ and driver-assist systems share sensors.

A camera mounted inside the windscreen has been added to the previous radar-only PCS and ACC systems, for vehicle size and lane-marker recognition.

This further refines ACC performance by providing excellent accuracy of preceding vehicle recognition, path detection and cut-in vehicle detection.

Lane Departure Warning+
The improved Lexus Departure Warning+ also has a progressive strategy. The "plus sign" indicates that it includes steering assistance.

It uses the camera on the windscreen to track the vehicle's course between lane markings on the road surface.

If it judges the IS is about to move out of its lane without the turn indicator being used, it alerts the driver by sounding a buzzer and lighting up a warning on the multi-information display.

If the vehicle is still moving outside the lane, it will apply light steering force to assist the driver to bring the vehicle back on course.

Excellent camera sensitivity means the technology can operate during rain and even when only one side of the road has a line marker.

An LDW indicator is shown in the combination meter when it is in operation and its status is shown on the multi-information display. A switch on the steering wheel turns the system on and off.

For the new IS Line, the system has been advanced so that it can warn the driver if it detects signs of driver drowsiness, inattention or distraction.

It does this by combining two pieces of information - data from the camera about the vehicle's position within the lane, and data on the driver's steering operations.

Lexus has refined the safety package in IS Line by introducing new features and adding technology to existing systems.

New features include the Lexus Safety System+ suite on all models and Drive Start Control on IS 200t and IS 300h.

IS Line has a comprehensive active and passive safety package, along with high levels of mechanical grip, a powerful brake system and electric power-assisted rack and pinion steering.

It also has high visibility both for the driver and others around it, with daytime running lamps (DRLs), emergency brake signal and reversing camera*.

IS Line's suite of electronic active safety measures are coordinated by the Lexus Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management (VDIM) system, including vehicle stability control, traction control and ABS brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist.

Safety features include reversing camera with Rear Guide Assist, clearance and parking sonar (four sensors front and four rear), Emergency Brake Light, rear seat-belt monitor and Type-Pressure Warning System (TPWS).

IS Line has 10 Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags, including two-stage driver and front-passenger SRS airbags, driver and front-passenger SRS knee airbags, and rear-seat SRS side airbags.

The IS Line's passive safety package also includes Whiplash-Injury Lessening front seats.

The IS bonnet has a pop-up feature to lessen potential head injuries in the event of a collision with a pedestrian.

The pop-up hood technology lessens Head Injury Criterion (HIC) by up to 50 per cent.

The system needs less than half a second to detect, determine and activate the safety device.

Actuators under the trailing edge of the aluminium bonnet can raise it instantly by 70mm to create space between the bonnet and the engine and better absorb impact.

F Sport and Sports Luxury models have the added features of Blind-Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).

Drive Start Control
Lexus IS 200t and IS 300h have Drive Start Control to help prevent abrupt starts and excessive acceleration when operating the shift lever.

If an abnormal shift (R → D, D → R, N → R, P→D, P→R) is detected while accelerating, a warning is displayed in the multi-information display and power output is reduced to limit acceleration, helping to avoid a collision.

All IS Line models have Hill Start Assist Control.

Tyre Pressure Warning System
TPWS monitors tyre pressures and alerts the driver if a tyre has low air pressure.

The TPWS reset operation can be completed via the steering wheel switch and on the Multi information Display.

It is fitted to all IS Line models.

Blind Spot Monitor
BSM* employs a quasi-millimetre wave radar installed on the back of the vehicle to detect other vehicles present in adjacent lanes as well as vehicles travelling at high speeds and approaching the driver's blind spot.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert
RCTA* works in concert with the BSM to alert the driver to objects approaching at the rear-side of the vehicle with an audible alert as well as flashing indicators on the vehicle's external side mirrors.

Finally, IS Line features an advanced security system that includes security alarm control with an ultrasonic break-in sensor.
