LEXUS INTRODUCES SHARPER, SAFER, MORE REFINED ES SEDAN


The all-new luxury Lexus ES 300h mid-size sedan, arriving in national dealerships this month, delivers sharper performance, new safety technology and craftsmanship that has been elevated to the next level.

In an ambitious move that signals the brand's on-going commitment to electrification of its vehicles, Lexus Australia is offering the seventh-generation ES as an exclusively hybrid range in Luxury and Sports Luxury grades.

Now in its seventh generation, the latest ES builds on the car's renowned comfort, refinement and luxury appointments with an exceptionally rigid new chassis that allows for a more dynamic exterior design and even better driving performance.

The ES 300h joins the new flagship models, LS sedan and LC coupe, in delivering eye-catching styling with greater emotional appeal.

It is the first vehicle in its segment to include, as standard fitment, head-up display, 12.3-inch multimedia screen, wireless phone charger and road-sign assist. The latest Lexus Safety System+ incorporates new features and expanded capabilities.

Australia is one of the first global markets to receive the ES 300h with its new self-charging hybrid system.

Power has been boosted almost six per cent (9kW) to 160kW while fuel consumption has been reduced by 16.4 per cent to an exemplary 4.6 litres/100km (combined cycle). It is the most fuel-efficient car in its class that does not require a plug.

Despite the new-generation enhancements and additional equipment, Lexus is encouraging greater uptake of its hybrid technology by launching the new range with a recommended retail price below $60,000 for the Luxury grade - a reduction of more than $3,800. Sports Luxury pricing has been increased by less than $3,000.

Lexus Australia chief executive Scott Thompson said the performance and sophistication of the hybrid-powered ES creates an entirely new feeling of amazing that will attract new customers to the brand as well as traditional Lexus buyers.

"The all-new ES 300h showcases craftsmanship and innovation in every detail from its coupe-like body to its premium interior," Mr Thompson said.

"We are also delighted to introduce a luxury mid-size sedan with a fourth-generation self-charging hybrid powertrain that delivers enhanced performance with minimal emissions," he said.

Improved dynamics, performance and safety for the all-new ES begin with the advanced new platform that delivers rigidity close to the flagship LC and LS models.

Advanced combustion technologies have resulted in a new-generation 2.5-litre petrol engine that is among the most thermally efficient engines in a production vehicle.

It is combined with hybrid system components that are smaller, lighter and more efficient while ensuring smoother power delivery.

A newly designed suspension system - MacPherson struts at the front and a trailing-arm, multi-link set-up at the rear - adopt saturation-type shock absorbers to improve overall responsiveness.

The driving experience can be further enhanced with active sound control, generating an audio feedback that gives the aural effect of up and downshifts like those experienced with a geared automatic transmission.

The style, technology and craftsmanship for the all-new ES have been inspired by the Lexus LS flagship sedan. A refined sense of sportiness in the ES design comes from the longer, lower and wider silhouette, complemented by a larger footprint due to the longer wheelbase and wider tracks.

Alloy wheels are standard - 17-inch for Luxury while the 18-inch Sports Luxury wheels feature a hollow rim structure to help reduce tyre noise.

Attention to detail is demonstrated throughout the interior with elaborate design and masterful execution using hand-crafted surfaces and high-quality components.

Essential information for the driver is available through the 12.3-inch multimedia display screen, colour head-up display and an ultra-sharp LCD instrument panel that incorporates a 7-inch multi-information display.

Satellite navigation, Lexus Enform and DAB+ digital radio are standard. The Remote Touch Interface pad has been redesigned and gains vibration feedback.

Heated front seats in ES Luxury offer 10-way power adjustment. In Sports Luxury, they are also ventilated with 14-way adjustment for the driver's seat and 12-way for the passenger seat. Rear headroom has been improved while luggage space benefits from the hybrid battery being relocated under the rear seat.

ES Luxury features a 10-speaker Pioneer audio system. For Sports Luxury, the ES debuts a 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system with world-first design architecture created to immerse occupants in the most powerful, precise and richest audio experience yet, no matter their seating position.

Other ES Luxury equipment includes dual-zone air-conditioning, automatic rain-sensing wipers, a moonroof, electronic park brake, premium trim and a power-adjustable steering column.

Sports Luxury expands the air-conditioning to three zones with a humidity sensor. It is also equipped with a hands-free boot opener, semi-aniline leather-accented seats, heated steering wheel and adjustable, heated rear seats that recline.

Advanced safety technologies

The new ES 300h is equipped as standard with the latest active safety and driver assistance technologies from the Lexus Safety System+. This package introduces new capabilities and expands the scenarios in which it can provide added protection for driver and passengers and help prevent an accident from happening.

The new features include daytime cyclist detection which is part of the comprehensive pre-collision system. Already capable of detecting oncoming vehicles and pedestrians, the system has also been enhanced to detect pedestrians at night by increasing the radar's sensitivity and dynamic range.

In addition to auto high beam that automatically dips headlights to avoid dazzling other drivers at night, Sports Luxury gains an adaptive high beam system with 24 LEDs (8 in the top row, 16 in the bottom row). It is capable of adjusting the light distribution pattern and brightness to provide optimal illumination while reducing glare for oncoming drivers.

All-new ES has 10 airbags, pop-up bonnet, all-speed radar active cruise control, reversing camera, hill-start assist control and clearance sonar. Sports Luxury gains a panoramic view camera, blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert.

EMOTIONAL DESIGN REFLECTS PERFORMANCE CAPABILITIES


The new coupe-like silhouette and artfully designed interior of the seventh-generation Lexus ES reflect the model's new-found performance capabilities.

Its eye-catching appearance is based on the concept of "provocative elegance" - introducing daring design elements that challenge the traditional expectations of luxury-car buyers.

Central to its evocative styling is the all-new Global Architecture - K (GA-K) platform that gave designers the flexibility to create a visibly striking car with a dynamic yet fluid shape.

The new ES is longer (+60mm), lower (-5mm) and wider (+45mm) with wheels that have been pushed closer to the corners thanks to a 50mm longer wheelbase and wider tracks (+10mm front) and (+30mm rear).

"Provocative elegance" starts with the latest iteration of the brand's signature grille. It follows the path set forth by the LC coupe and LS flagship, yet adds individual cues that are unique to the ES like the vertical grille pattern and satin-plated trim.

The theme is repeated at each corner of the bumper to give the ES a wide, planted look that promotes strength and stability.

Slim headlamps feature distinctive "L" shaped indicator lights. Luxury grade has LED low and high-beam lamps, while Sports Luxury features an adaptive lighting system that automatically adjusts light distribution to avoid dazzling other drivers at night.

A 16mm lower bonnet also contributes to the distinctive silhouette with its aggressive downward slant eliciting a refined sense of sportiness.

The roofline is low and sleek with a smooth arc that flows into a sharply slanted C pillar. For contrast, the long, uninterrupted shoulder line extends from the top of the front wheel arch to the corner of the boot.

The rear is clean and sharply chiselled with LED taillamps that wrap around the quarter panels to provide a continuous styling line. The lights feature a distinctive three-dimensional, L-shaped design that gives each cluster an eye-catching depth.

Wheel designs add the finishing touches to the new ES. The 17-inch wheel for the Luxury grade is a split five-spoke design with dark silver accents and a machined finish. Sports Luxury gains an 18-inch split five-spoke wheel design with a high-gloss chrome finish. Similar to the LS, the wheel features a noise-reducing hollow rim structure helps reduce the resonance sound generated by the tyres. A tyre-pressure warning system is standard.

Ten colours make up the exterior paint palette including two new shades designed specifically for the ES: Glacial Ecru is designed to mimic light reflected off fresh snow while Radiata Green is inspired by ocean water in sunlight.

The Future of Lexus Interiors

The "provocative elegance" of the ES cabin is built around the Lexus "seat in control" concept with a driver-centric cockpit complemented by more open, spacious and relaxing areas for passengers.

This concept - introduced with the LC coupe and refined in the LS sedan - has been taken a step further in the ES.

The driver's focus is kept on the road ahead by locating the main information displays within the driver's line of sight. There is a 12.3-inch centre display screen, colour head-up display (HUD) and an ultra-sharp LCD instrument panel with a large analogue tachometer, digital speedometer and easy-to-read 7-inch multi-information display.

The HUD, with its class-leading display size, projects relevant vehicle information onto the windscreen. The image appears to be projected 2.5m in front of the driver, making it easier to see both the display image and the road ahead.

In addition to basic functionality such as speed, fuel level and shift position, the HUD can be adjusted to suit the driver's preferred parameters with the capability of showing speed-limit signs, lane-keeping assist warnings and navigation directions.

Additional information is available through the Lexus multimedia system that sits high on the dashboard in a position that results in minimum distraction. The 12.3-inch electro multi vision display features crisp, easy-to-read graphics and a revised menu.

Satellite navigation, Lexus Enform and DAB+ digital radio are standard. An updated Remote Touch Interface pad now has more useable surface area and vibration feedback to make it easier to use.

A More Comfortable Cabin for All

The driving position in the ES has been refined with a more natural steering-wheel angle, revised pedal positions and standard 10-way power adjustable and heated front seats. For Sports Luxury, there are 14 adjustments for the driver's seat and 12 for the front passenger. A new suction-type ventilation system for the front seats draws air directly from the air-conditioner to provide improved cooling in hot weather.

The steering wheel is borrowed directly from the LS and features an ergonomically shaped rim - with Sports Luxury featuring wood trim and heating elements. The analogue clock is also from the LS while the flagship sedan also inspired the design of the audio and heating/ventilation controls.


Despite the sleek roofline, rear headroom has been increased slightly due to a lower hip point and a carefully configured headliner. Cargo area is now 454 litres due to a reconfigured rear suspension and the relocation of the hybrid battery pack under the rear seat.

Sports Luxury is equipped with a hands-free boot opener to make loading cargo easier. Interior storage has been improved with the addition of a more easily accessible dual-hinge centre console and door bins capable of holding a large drink bottle or a tablet.

The interior features four colour schemes - Black, Chateau, Topaz - and, exclusively for Sports Luxury, Rich Cream.

In addition to the Piano Black ornamentation for ES Luxury, the ES Sports Luxury offers Shimamoku Black, Shimamoku Brown and Bamboo.

LEXUS ES 300h: A NEW ERA OF PERFORMANCE


The seventh-generation Lexus ES builds on the model's strengths with an all-new hybrid system and a chassis that sharpens performance and delivers a more engaging drive.

The ES 300h is equipped with a new, fourth-generation self-charging hybrid drive system, delivering exceptional fuel efficiency, responsive performance and minimal emissions for a vehicle of its size.

Chief engineer Yasuhiro Sakakibara said his goal was to deliver the best-performing ES while retaining the model's reputation for comfort and quietness.

"We knew that this ES had to feel responsive and easy to drive, no matter what kind of road it was on," Sakakibara-san said.

His goal was achieved due to a solid foundation - the new GA-K platform that rivals the LC coupe and LS sedan in terms of torsional stiffness and uses various high-tensile steels to reduce weight.

Enhancements such as an all-new multi-link rear suspension, rack-mounted electric power steering and a V-brace behind the rear seat gave the engineers the flexibility to tune the ES with a new-found precision.

Fourth generation hybrid drive system

The ES 300h is powered by an ultra-efficient 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder petrol engine working with a lighter, more compact and more power-dense electric motor.

The all-new 2.5-litre engine incorporates fast-burn combustion technology that makes it one of the most thermally efficient engines in a production vehicle.

The result is more power without increasing emissions or fuel consumption. Total system power is 160kW and combined-cycle fuel economy is from just 4.6 litres/100km.

Impressive heat and combustion management is achieved by features including straight intake ports, increased valve angles and laser-clad valve seats as well as variable-capacity oil pump, multi-hole injectors, VVT-iE (electric) on the intake valves and a variable cooling system.

A more sophisticated hybrid system control computer delivers smoother, more flowing power delivery, improving acceleration and control with engine speed increases in line with vehicle speed.

The nickel-metal hydride hybrid battery is more compact, allowing it to be located beneath the back seat, without intruding on boot space. It also contributes to front-rear weight distribution and a lower centre of gravity.

A newly developed hybrid transaxle combines the high efficiency engine of the ES 300h with a new gear train and high-output motor, to minimise fuel consumption and optimise driving performance.

A sequential Shiftmatic program provides shift range selection with the operation of the paddle shift switch or the S position on the shift lever. It delivers highly responsive engine braking in six steps, providing better driving on winding roads. Paddle shifter operation is enabled even when driving in D range, allowing shift operations to be performed without taking hands off the steering wheel.

In a first for Lexus, Auto Glide Control (AGC) helps reduce engine braking force and allows the vehicle to coast - similar to a transmission in neutral position. It operates when the vehicle is set to Eco mode and transmission is in Drive. AGC will not operate when the vehicle is moving downhill, or when braking is applied, to ensure engine braking force is maintained to aid vehicle control.

Lexus ES is equipped with a Drive Mode Select system that allows the driver to tailor the car's settings to varying road conditions using Eco, Normal and Sport modes. In Eco mode, fuel consumption is prioritised by reducing the engine responses to the throttle and suppressing the use of the climate-control system. Sport mode quickens throttle responses, changes the transmission shift program and alters the steering assist for added control.

Improved ride quality and handling

Newly designed suspension set-ups deliver precise handling with exceptional comfort.
Changes to the front MacPherson-strut suspension improve overall responsiveness. The strut angle is now better aligned with the load path from the wheel for improved ride quality while an increase in caster angle (+2 degrees) and caster trail (+8.5mm) help to improve straight line stability.

Newly developed saturation-type shock absorbers can respond to even the smallest movements thanks to a non-overlapping auxiliary valve that allows damper oil to flow in either direction before entering the main valve. Suspension stroke friction has been reduced by 35 per cent, increasing ride comfort and control.

The rear suspension's trailing arm, multilink set-up also benefits from the responsive new saturation-type shock absorbers. They are located near the back of the rear seats and mounted on a different axis from the coil springs, ensuring optimum luggage space. Vertical suspension stroke friction has been reduced by 30 per cent.
A higher mounting point for the trailing arm and larger bushes contribute to improved control over road irregularities. Wider spacing of the stabiliser bushing mounts also help reduce roll.

A new electric power steering system delivers more precise inputs and feedback with the assist motor mounted directly on the rack instead of the steering column. The
new layout offers 50mm tilt (+30mm) and 60mm (+40mm) telescoping range.
