LEXUS INTRODUCES NEW GATEWAY MODEL


Lexus Australia has announced aggressive pricing to accompany the introduction of the striking design, advanced technology and luxurious quality of the new luxury compact UX SUV.

Prices for the new UX range start below $45,000*, which ensures it is the most affordable of all Lexus vehicles other than the Luxury version of the CT 200h hatch.

Comprehensively equipped in Luxury, Sports Luxury and performance-oriented F Sport grades, the all-new UX is also offered with a complementary range of enhancement packs that amplify the vehicle's technology, audio, performance, safety and luxury specifications.

Silky smooth performance is available through a highly tractable and efficient 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in conventional 126kW UX 200 or 131kW self-charging hybrid UX 250h configurations. Hybrid variants add $3,500.

As well as offering the most power and fastest acceleration, the UX 250h is also the most fuel-efficient with combined cycle economy from 4.5 litres/100km**.

Both front and all-wheel-drive versions of the UX 250h will be available, the latter equipped with a compact, lightweight and fuel-efficient E-Four system for an additional $4,500.

The innovative E-Four provides electric motor drive to the rear axle, automatically providing extra grip in slippery conditions. All-wheel drive will be an option on Sports Luxury and F Sport variants.

Lexus chief executive Scott Thompson said the arrival of the UX range with affordable pricing would enable the luxury lifestyle brand to introduce an entirely new customer base to its "experience amazing" commitment.

"The UX delivers a fresh and contemporary appeal to young buyers seeking new and exciting experiences relevant to their lifestyles," Mr Thompson said.

"For many of them, this will not only be their first Lexus vehicle, but also their first entry into the luxury segment," he said.

UX 200 variants will be available at Lexus dealerships from late this month while the self-charging hybrid UX 250h variants are due to arrive in mid-January.

The UX is the first model to be built on the Lexus Global Architecture - C platform, which results in strong dynamic performance with its low centre of gravity, highly rigid body and suspension tuned for responsiveness, stability and ride comfort.

Lexus Safety Sense + is standard, including a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, all-speed active cruise control, lane trace assist, traffic sign recognition, auto high beam, blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert.

Additional safety features include eight airbags, reversing camera, parking sensors, tyre inflation warning, vehicle speed-limit warning and an anti-theft system.

Luxury models are equipped with a 10.3" display screen, satellite navigation, 8-speaker DAB audio, 7" thin-film transistor meter, GPS clock and illuminated entry.

Their technical specification extends to 750kg towing capacity (UX 200 only), front performance rod and three drive modes (normal, eco, sport).

Notable exterior features include 17" alloy wheels, acoustic windscreen glass, roof rails, LED headlamps, fog lights and tail lamps, power-adjustable heated mirrors.

The spacious cabin offers a leather-accented steering wheel and shift lever, power-adjustable steering column, electro-chromatic rear-view mirror, 8-way power-adjustable front seats with heater.

Moving up to Sports Luxury, additional features include 18-inch wheels with run-flat tyres, leather-accented seats, ventilated and 8-way power-adjustable driver and front passenger seats, 13-speaker Mark Levinson audio, an adaptive high beam system, panoramic view monitor and high-grade finishes.

Unique F Sport is distinguished by its bumpers, grille and special 18-inch wheels plus sports seats, steering wheel, shift lever and pedals. This grade is also equipped with adaptive variable suspension, five drive modes, rear performance damper and active sound control.

A NEW CROSSOVER FOR A NEW LUXURY CUSTOMER


Lexus has advanced its innovation in luxury utility vehicles by introducing a new gateway vehicle to the brand, the 2019 UX.

The new Lexus UX delivers the brand's innovative luxury and safety in a package that combines bold new design elements and ultra-efficient new petrol and hybrid powertrains.

The UX will not only be the first Lexus for many customers, but also their first luxury vehicle.

The UX name is derived from the design team's guiding concept and describes the vehicle's mission: Urban (U) and Crossover (X).

"The Lexus UX is designed for the modern urban explorer seeking a fresh, contemporary and dynamic take on luxury driving," said Chika Kako, executive vice president of Lexus International and chief engineer of the UX.

"We designed the UX to appeal to young buyers who seek not only what is new and exciting, but what is also relevant to their lifestyles," she said.

Infused with dynamic attitude, the 2019 Lexus UX is engineered to deliver quick and engaging driving with a Lexus-smooth demeanor, making it a unique entry in the luxury compact crossover segment.

The 2019 Lexus UX is available as the front-wheel-drive UX 200, introducing a new high-efficiency 126kW 2.0 litre, four-cylinder engine coupled with a new Direct Shift continuously variable transmission.

The UX 250h pairs an even higher-efficiency version of the 2.0 litre petrol engine with a new fourth-generation hybrid drive system engineered specifically for this platform. It is available with either front-wheel drive or E Four electric all-wheel drive.

Combined output of 131kW makes UX 250h the leader in performance as well as fuel efficiency while providing exhilarating driving, high-speed responsiveness and a feeling of smooth, natural acceleration.

Lexus UX is the brand's first vehicle built on the new Global Architecture - Compact (GA C) platform with its lightweight yet super-rigid structure, extremely low centre of gravity and refined suspension.

As a result, the UX delivers exemplary handling agility and ride comfort, along with a distinctive driving personality.

Seven key features in the all-new Lexus UX highlight the lengths to which the brand's designers, engineers and master craftspeople went to create the stunning new luxury crossover:

Stand-out examples are the collaboration with neural scientists to perfect the sound of the doors closing, windscreen wipers that pause to avoid splashing people getting in and out of the car, and cutting-edge measuring equipment that contributes to precision assembly.

The result is a luxury SUV that is rich in imaginative technology and beautiful craftsmanship, augmenting its bold design, agile performance and breakthrough ideas.

1. The science of luxury door sounds

Car doors are the driver's first point of contact with any vehicle.

Lexus acoustic engineers left no stone unturned in their pursuit of luxury by collaborating with neural scientists to arrive at the ultimate car-door sound.

The team used research into brain waves to produce a satisfying, reassuring tone when the UX doors close. They selected bespoke materials and adjusted the door shape by tenths of a millimetre to perfect the sound.

Finally, to ensure the correct closing sound, Takumi master craftspeople listen and, where necessary, adjust each UX door in a dedicated "quiet room" facility before the car leaves the Kyushu plant in Japan.

2. 'Sashiko' stitching on leather seats

The new UX can be ordered with leather upholstery inspired by "sashiko", a traditional Japanese stitching technique used to apply protective quilting to judo and kendo uniforms.

Lexus craftspeople stitch along mathematical curves aligned with the perforation pattern and the seat ventilation outlets. The distinctive visual effect is a sophisticated fusion of art and functionality.

This special upholstery, which reflects the UX signature front grille, is available on Sports Luxury.

3. Wireless illuminated vent controls

Each ultra-slim air vent on the new UX features a single knob to control both airflow direction and intensity, ensuring ease of operation.

Vent controls on Sports Luxury are illuminated by a wireless LED light source powered by electrical induction.

This advanced yet elegant detail helps the driver or front seat passenger find the vent control in the dark.

Additionally, it also creates a comforting sense of depth, even though the illuminated knob is only 3mm in diameter.

4. Sophisticated power window system

Lexus engineers have complemented the ambience of sophisticated luxury inside the UX cabin by carefully controlling the opening and closing of its power windows to reduce noise.

The driver and passengers are protected against power-window jams and entanglement with a function that prevents shirtsleeves or children's fingers from being trapped.

5. Windscreen wipers which pause for passengers

The wiper system in the new UX is one of the most innovative of its kind, equipped not only with an automatic sensor but with the ability to slow down gradually so as not to impair driver concentration.

Underlying the Lexus spirit of 'Omotenashi' (Japanese for "hospitality and polite service"), the wipers automatically stop when a door opens to prevent people entering or exiting the car from being splashed.

6. Imaginative folding luggage cover

The new UX's luggage cover can be folded like a net when not being used and stored in the car with a minimum of obstruction.

This is one of many innovative features that highlight the customer-centric approach to Lexus design.

7. Precision-assembled tailgate

The assembly of every UX is performed by skilled Lexus craftspeople, using cutting-edge technology.

Every UX tailgate and tailgate opening is measured at around 200 different reference points prior to assembly to ensure smooth operation.

The digital measuring equipment even allows for minute differences in temperature and humidity.

Based on this data, Lexus craftspeople are then able to adjust each UX tailgate to fit exactly, ensuring it will operate perfectly for many years to come.

INTERVIEW: UX CHIEF ENGINEER CHIKA KAKO


The amazing new Lexus UX is a tribute to the vision and leadership of chief engineer Chika Kako.

Her goal was to create a new genre of crossover: one that is strong and stable, yet beautifully styled and agile.

Here, Chika Kako discusses what inspired and motivated her and her team during the development of the new UX.

Q.: Alongside chief engineer, your visiting card says you are also executive vice president of the Lexus brand division. What will be the UX's role in growing the Lexus marque?
CK: In 2017 we launched the LC sports coup้ to firmly position Lexus as a visionary and exciting luxury lifestyle brand. The LS flagship sedan and ES executive sedan consolidated this brand positioning. Now, it's the turn of the UX to create amazing experiences and welcome a new kind of customer to the Lexus brand.

Q.: How will the UX deliver these amazing experiences?
CK: Through emotions. I believe it's a car that really connects with people's emotions. When potential customers see the UX on the street for the first time, we hope they'll say: "Wow, what a cool car!" Once attracted by the design, we want them to experience the car's imaginative technology, Japanese craftsmanship and agile performance.

Q.: How did market research influence the UX exterior design?
CK: We began research in the USA in 2013, by conducting an extensive series of focus groups and home visits with the owners of competing vehicles. We learned the interviewees were underwhelmed by conventional SUV looks. They also told us they wanted a crossover that drives like a hatchback. Interestingly, the findings from Europe, Japan and China were all very similar to those in the USA.

Q.: What inspired your team when designing the UX interior?
CK: One of my missions was to enhance the emotional appeal of a car's interior. A vehicle's cabin is composed of components such as the instrument panel, seats, and trim, but it's the intelligent orchestration of these parts that matters most. We used the principles of a Japanese architectural concept called 'engawa' where the boundaries between inside and outside are seamlessly connected and 'kansei' engineering which aims to create an emotional bond between the customer and product.

Q.: How is luxury expressed in the new UX?
CK: Luxury is not just about materials but also about experiences. In the past, we tended to picture luxury in terms of expense and extravagance, "Art de Vivre" is about enjoying values other than material wealth. This was an idea we developed in designing the new UX.

Q.: What kind of people will buy the UX?
CK: The UX's concept keywords - "Creative Urban Explorer" and "Art de Vivre" - give rise to a target customer with an active lifestyle who enjoys vibrant urban environments and embraces pursuits like travel, cycling and DIY. Expressed in more concrete terms, that customer may be a young professional working in a creative job like publishing, but with a keen interest in modern design and sustainable living.

Q.: Why is the UX not "just another crossover"?
CK: Right from the beginning we set out to give the UX a unique character: a car that embodies solid crossover appeal, while inheriting the precise and responsive feel of a Lexus. The result is a truly innovative vehicle that handles like a hatchback while delivering elegant performance combined with peace of mind.

Q.: Where does the name "UX" come from?
CK: The UX vehicle name is derived from the concept keywords - "Urban + X-over (crossover) = UX." Coincidentally, the first letters of "Creative Urban Explorer" form the word CUE, meaning opportunity. I actually love CUE as a clear and succinct expression of the vehicle concept.

Q.: How does the UX meet the needs of women drivers?
CK: Today, it's very common to see women driving crossovers in the city, many of them allured by the powerful presence and sporty design. At the same time some find the manoeuvrability of a high body crossover off-putting. I wanted to counter this perception by offering a car with exceptionally nimble handling, that is as easy to drive as a hatchback.

Q.: Finally, how did you motivate your team over the last 5 years?
CK: (laughing) With a plant, would you believe! We faced many changing demands and challenges working on the new UX. I wanted a motif to express this, so I named our team email list after a Japanese plant called the lantana. Despite its fragile appearance, the lantana is actually very hardy and not easily affected by changes in environment. Inspired by this plant, I knew my team would grow stronger and stronger throughout the project.

CAPTIVATING UX DESIGN BASED ON LEXUS "YET" PHILOSOPHY


The head-turning Lexus UX luxury SUV took just two years to progress from a radical design study into the brand's newest road-going model.

The production version, with its meticulously crafted surfaces, has stayed true to the 2016 UX Concept that combined a coup้-like roofline with the muscular appearance of a 4x4.

Now available in Australia, the intention in launching the all-new UX was to attract an ever-wider group of younger, highly connected urban customers to the Lexus brand.

Chief designer Tetsuo Miki said development of the road-going UX was guided by a human-centred and pioneering approach embodied by the Lexus "YET philosophy".

"The new UX combines a compact body with the robust strength of a crossover vehicle," Miki-san said at the vehicle's global launch.

"Its meticulously crafted surfaces express simple yet captivating design, as well as suggesting great strength and dynamism."

The following creative elements in the all-new Lexus UX SUV are central to the YET philosophy.

1. Exterior YET Interior
Lexus designers worked to smooth the boundary between the exterior and interior of the car, connecting them with near seamless continuity.

This approach is most evident in the UX driver's seat, where you can really sense the extremities of the car, making it much easier to drive and manoeuvre.

2. Rugged SUV YET Dynamic car
An unconventional mix of styles has resulted in a highly original crossover design. It combines the distinctive features from two very different types of car: the rugged wheel-arch mouldings of a 4x4 juxtaposed with a fin-shaped rear combination light inspired by the rear spoiler of a sports car.

3. Robust exterior YET Glamorous image
The combination of a robust exterior and intricately sculpted bodywork gives the UX its unique identity, resulting in an exterior which exemplifies the Lexus brand.

4. Stylish YET Functional
Wheel-arch mouldings on the UX are not just installed to protect the bodywork from stone chips; they also improve aerodynamic stability. The same is true of the rear combination lamps and 17" alloy wheels, which both perform an aerodynamic function.

5. Driver-oriented YET Relaxing for passengers
Inside the all-new UX, designers created a driver-oriented cockpit, while at the same time using central ornamentation to achieve a smooth connection between the driver and passenger areas.

6. Secure interior YET Open feel

LEXUS UX: A LEAP FORWARD IN DESIGN


The 2019 Lexus UX is a leap forward in the compact luxury crossover segment with a design theme inspired by a secure, robust look crossbred with the stance of a sports car.

The spindle grille, though sharing its basic form with other Lexus models, is unique to the UX. It features a new block-shape mesh pattern with individual elements that gradually change in shape as they radiate out from the central Lexus emblem. The grille creates an intriguing three-dimensional appearance that changes with the viewing angle.

The headlamp design completes the UX's face, giving it a determined, confident gaze. Daytime running lights arranged in an arrowhead motif above the headlights complement the Lexus L-shaped lighting signature. These appear like brows above the standard single-projector dual-beam LED headlights or the optional ultra-small 3-projector LED units.

The full-width rear lights project a distinctive night-time signature formed by a sequence of 120 LEDs tapering toward the centre, measuring just 3mm thick at the narrowest point.

The vehicle's basic form flows out from the lines of the spindle grille to envelop the cabin. Crisp, prominent sculpted surfaces and dramatically flared front and rear fenders reflect the robust inspiration. An aerodynamic profile, large wheels pushed to the corners and a bold front fascia create the agile, sporty stance.

Takumi (Japanese for "artisan") modellers worked with design and engineering teams on all exterior surfaces. Their work was crucial to refining surfaces down to one-hundredth of a millimetre, pushing the boundaries for what could be produced in the body-stamping presses.

In a world first, the wheel arch mouldings that protect the body from gravel thrown up by the tyres use airflow over their edges to reduce turbulence and lift, contributing to the vehicle's stability.

A similar contribution is made by the rear combination lamps. Unique aero-stabilising blade lights begin at the top of the rear fenders and span the rear of the vehicle. By guiding airflow around the rear of the UX, this design also reduces turbulence and lift, contributing to vehicle stability when cornering and driving in crosswinds.

A wing spoiler at the rear edge of the roof, along with a flat underbody, contribute to vehicle quietness and fuel efficiency.

The UX comes with 17 x 6.5-inch aluminium alloy aero ventilating wheels with 215/60R17 tyres or 18 inch alloy wheels with 225/50 run-flat tyres.

In another world first, the 5-spoke 17 inch wheels feature Gurney flaps along the spoke edges designed to reduce wind resistance while also increasing airflow to cool the disc brakes. The design pulls air from the inside of the wheel, while the air flow on the outer side of the vehicle is regulated to follow the wheel surface.

The 2019 Lexus UX is offered in a palette of 13 exterior colours to accentuate its bold lines, including three new hues.

INTERIOR DESIGN: A NEW KIND OF LEXUS LUXURY


Lexus designed the UX cabin to evoke the feel of a luxury car, but with the higher seating position and versatility desired in a crossover.

Materials and workmanship are pure Lexus, combining Japanese traditions in craftsmanship and hospitality with innovative production techniques.

Designers created a feeling of seamless continuity: from the driver's seat, the upper section of the instrument panel appears to extend out beyond the windscreen into the fenders. This gives the driver an excellent field of vision and a clear sense of the vehicle's dimensions and tyre placement.

When viewed from outside the vehicle, the bonnet appears to connect directly to the instrument panel through the windscreen, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior.

Entering and exiting the UX is aided through optimal placement of the hip-point and unique shaping of the seat cushion. The human-centred approach shows clearly in the instrument panel's low, unobtrusive design and slim A-pillar mouldings that are shaped to improve visibility.

The UX hip and heel points ensure the driver feels closer to the road than in a conventional SUV. Typical of Lexus, the UX offers a very quiet driving experience, thanks to the high-strength structure and optimal placement of specially designed sound-absorbing and insulating materials. In typical Lexus fashion, engineers traced noises to their sources to keep them out of the cabin. Even the sound of water being displaced by the tyres is reduced.

The UX makes the driver feel more in touch with the road thanks to a "seat-in-control" concept. Critical vehicle functions are grouped around the driver's side of the cabin, and the seatback shape allows the driver to operate them while maintaining a comfortable, natural posture.

Front seats offer 6-way manual or 8-way power adjustments, the latter with adjustable lumbar support for the driver. Front-seat cushions use springs and foam specially designed to gently envelop occupants while uniformly dispersing pressure under the occupant's sciatic area.

Lexus luxury extends throughout the cabin. The three-spoke steering wheel and analogue clock come from the Lexus LS. Lexus Climate Concierge automatically links heating and cooling airflow with the heated and ventilated seats to optimise interior temperature comfort. Renowned Lexus attention to detail is also evident in a headliner design that eliminates distracting shadows at the windscreen header, as well as control switches with a signature "Lexus feel".

Other imaginative technology in the interior includes the use of white LEDs for the dome, map and cargo area lights as well as the front foot wells, glovebox and console switches.

Each air vent uses a new single-knob control for airflow direction and volume; by combining the two functions in a single control, the air passages of each vent could be enlarged, improving airflow while reducing noise.

Available illuminated vent controls with distinctive LED light sources are wirelessly powered by electromagnetic resonance of two adjacent magnetic coils vibrating at the same frequency.

Luxurious new finishes

From its inception, Lexus has drawn on Japanese traditions in craftsmanship and hospitality to infuse its vehicles with a unique sense of contemporary luxury. Lexus adapted this approach to the 2019 UX to appeal especially to younger customers experiencing their first luxury vehicle.

Chief engineer Kako drew on her extensive experience in materials development and time spent working in Europe to help define the UX interior's appearance and quality. The result is an uncluttered "less is more" approach that makes the UX interior inviting and accessible.

"When it comes to determining whether an interior is good or bad, controlling the overall balance between the continuity, unity and contrast is more important than the relative specifications of individual components," she said.

One example is an optional leather upholstery inspired by sashiko, a customary Japanese quilting technique that is also used in the making of judo and kendo martial arts uniforms. It is combined with a "calculated art" perforation pattern on the lower part of the seat that is derived from mathematical curves and gradations in perfect alignment.

The Lexus UX offers a wide choice of interior colour combinations, each of which conveys a specific mood and accentuates the premium design. The seating is available with synthetic or genuine leather. The standard models offer a choice of five colours.

The sweeping instrument panel and cabin trim offer a choice of two different grain patterns and four colours. In a Lexus first, the UX offers a new trim finish inspired by the grain of Japanese paper, known as washi. It is common in traditional Japanese homes and it evokes a calm and warm feeling. A leather grain finish, also featured in the Lexus LC coupe and LS sedan, is also available.

F SPORT PACKAGE: EXCLUSIVE DESIGN AND TUNING


The F SPORT package is available for both the UX 200 and UX 250h, featuring exclusive design features and suspension tuning.

The F SPORT transformation includes an exclusive grille design featuring a mesh pattern created by individual L-shaped pieces.

The exclusive F SPORT front bumper features large fog-lamp bezels with L-shaped chrome mouldings and the same mesh pattern as the grille.

A revised rear bumper and jet-black trim on the front and rear mouldings complete the F SPORT look.

F SPORT-exclusive interior features include front sports seats made with a highly supportive integrated-foaming technique first developed for Lexus F models - technology that helps the seats conform to the occupant's body.

The special eight-way power-adjustable F SPORT front seats feature lumbar adjustment, as well as manual forward/backward adjustment for the headrests.

The digitally rendered instrument meter features a movable virtual ring inspired by the Lexus LFA supercar. It allows displayed content to be easily changed. Pushing a switch on the steering wheel moves the ring to the right and enlarges the multi-information display.

A leather-covered F SPORT steering wheel, leather-trimmed shift knob, 8 inch thin-film transistor colour display, and aluminium pedals and footrest are also part of the package.

To enhance performance, F SPORT variants are fitted with specific springs and stabiliser bars, plus a rear performance damper for a more refined ride.

The 18 inch, five twin-spoke aluminium alloy wheels unique to the F SPORT are even more rigid than standard UX wheels, contributing to responsiveness and handling agility.

The F SPORT option can be combined with a UX-tailored version of the new high-response Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system that debuted on the Lexus LC coupe and LS sedan flagship models.

The system increases damping force to minimise roll when cornering or changing lanes and reduces damping force in straight-line driving to preserve ride quality. With AVS, the vehicle's Drive Mode Selector adds the Sport S+ mode.

The UX F SPORT driving experience can be further enhanced with Acceleration Sound Control, which generates the aural effect of up- and down-shifts like those of a geared automatic transmission.

An additional Sonic Interaction Design function adjusts the sound the vehicle makes when driving in Sport S+ mode (S+ Sound).

Two exterior colours are exclusive to the F SPORT, White Nova and Heat Blue. Available seat colours are Black or - exclusive to F SPORT - Flare Red or White.

ULTRA EFFICIENT PERFORMANCE


New 2.0-litre petrol engine

The 2019 Lexus UX 200 delivers a combination of engaging performance and high efficiency from a new 2.0 litre in-line four-cylinder engine.

It is one of the most efficient engines on the market with revolutionary laser-clad intake valve seats with an all-new intake port profile, high compression ratio (13:1), D4-S direct and port fuel-injection, and high-speed combustion.

VVT iE intelligent variable valve-timing with an electric actuator on the intake side also enhances drivability while reducing emissions.

At 126kW, the UX 200 engine offers output similar to some competitors' 1.5 litre turbo engines, but with less complexity, lower under-bonnet heat, and lower powerplant weight for better vehicle balance.

The engine produces 205Nm of peak torque to give the UX excellent responsiveness in all driving situations.

A continuously variable capacity oil pump and a variable cooling system with an electric water pump contribute to ultra-low internal friction, further maximising engine performance and fuel efficiency.

The cooling system also has two flow-shutting valves to ensure quicker cabin heating on cold days and quicker cool-down when the air-conditioner is used.

Available automatic stop-and-start on petrol models enhances fuel efficiency and quietness in urban driving.

The new Direct-Shift continuously variable transmission (D CVT) delivers smooth, fuel-efficient performance with a direct driving feel.

The key to its distinct performance feel is a mechanical gearset that is used to start from a stand-still and accelerate before handing off to the continuously variable transmission pulley system.

The result is direct, linear and quick initial acceleration, while maintaining the benefits of a continuously variable transmission at mid and higher speeds.

The fixed-ratio first gear reduces the load on the belt and pulleys mechanism for start-off and low-speed driving, enabling them to be made smaller and lighter while providing a wider range of gear ratios.

The result is quicker ratio changes during acceleration and an overall ratio spread that maximises fuel efficiency.

Under strong acceleration, the D CVT can freely adjust the transmission ratios to simulate gear changes like a multi-gear automatic transmission.

Synchronisation of the increasing engine revs and vehicle speed provides a linear acceleration feel.

New-generation Lexus Hybrid Drive

Lexus has applied its world leadership in luxury hybrid vehicles to the 2019 UX 250h with a new-generation Lexus Hybrid Drive powertrain.

With total system power of 131kW, the UX 250h is the performance leader in the UX family as well as the fuel-efficiency leader. This hybrid provides exhilarating driving with high-speed responsiveness and a feeling of smooth, natural acceleration. The UX 250h is available with either front-wheel drive or E Four electric all-wheel drive.

The new-generation hybrid system - combining the new 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motor-generators - is more compact, lighter and has less internal friction than previous Lexus hybrid systems.

Compared with similarly sized Lexus hybrids, the power control unit of the UX is more powerful yet 20-per-cent smaller and 10-per-cent lighter.

Optimising the level of electric motor assistance and engine speed produces a linear acceleration feel without the engine having to run at high revs. Engine speed is synchronised with vehicle speed to create an immediate and continuous acceleration feel.

The new transaxle mounts the electric motor-generators (MG1 and MG2) coaxially rather than in-line. The resulting smaller and lighter package reduces frictional losses by 25 per cent compared with previous Lexus hybrids. In addition, MG2 is now a higher-speed motor, yielding better performance and efficiency.

The sequential Shiftmatic feature delivers responsive engine braking force in six steps with a shift feel similar to a manual transmission, using steering-wheel paddle-shift switches or the S position on the shift lever.

The maximum speed at which the hybrid system can operate with the petrol engine shut off, such as when driving on long downward slopes, has been raised from 70 km/h in previous Lexus hybrids to 115 km/h.

The new compact and lightweight nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) battery and compact cooling system are located under the rear seat for maximum cabin and cargo area space. This also supports the vehicle's low centre of gravity.

E-Four all-wheel drive

This all-wheel-drive system available for UX 250h uses a separate, dedicated 5.3kW electric motor-generator integrated into the rear differential.

Power distribution between the front and rear axles is automatically optimised by the vehicle stability control system when accelerating, cornering, or driving on slippery surfaces.

E Four provides stable driving on uphill slopes or snow-covered roads with lower fuel consumption than a conventional all-wheel-drive system that employs a power-split device and driveshaft.

E Four does more than assist traction in slippery conditions; the system can actively improve stability by adjusting rear-wheel power to help correct oversteer or understeer.

Drive Mode Select

Both the UX 200 and UX 250h Hybrid are equipped with Lexus Drive Mode Select, which allows the driver to tailor the driving experience by selecting from three different drive modes.

Normal mode provides an optimal balance between driving performance and fuel efficiency; ECO mode maximises fuel savings across all driving conditions by smoothing the throttle response and by moderating air-conditioning operation; Sport Mode delivers quicker throttle response and increased power steering feel; Sport S+ dramatically changes the handling dynamics.

A SOLID STRUCTURE PROMOTES OUTSTANDING AGILITY


Lexus instilled the UX with an outstanding combination of handling agility and smooth, quiet ride comfort that urban customers will find pleasing.

Key to achieving that balance is building the UX around the high-strength GA C global architecture platform.

Extensive use of high-tensile steel, high-strength adhesives and laser screw welding results in a highly rigid structure, an essential foundation for achieving sporty handling and luxurious ride comfort.

By using aluminium for the side doors, fenders and bonnet and composite materials for the tailgate, the UX has the lowest centre of gravity of any vehicle in its class at 594mm. As a result, the UX delivers a secure, agile feeling normally associated with lower sport hatches.

A unique ring structure around the hatch opening and behind the rear seats increases torsional rigidity to enhance crash performance, improve handling and reduce noise and vibration.

The MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension with trailing arms, both mounted to sub-frames, are specially tuned to deliver a combination of agility and comfort over well-worn urban street surfaces.

Carefully refined details such as the quality of the damper oil, oil seals and friction control in the shock absorbers make a significant positive impact on ride quality.

An upper strut brace increases torsional rigidity of the engine bay, and the steering rack bolts directly to the subframe without rubber bushings for more direct steering feel.

Active cornering assist, a function integrated with vehicle stability control, helps the vehicle trace the driver's desired line through a turn by applying some brake control on the inside wheels, suppressing the tendency to understeer. As a result, the UX drives through corners with greater precision while maintaining stability.

An electric power steering system with a new compact and highly rigid column-assist motor delivers handling with crisp, immediate response to driver inputs, and provides excellent steering feel.

A newly developed electric tilt-and-telescopic steering column is available for UX models equipped with power-adjustable front seats. In addition, on models with memory function, ingress and egress are made easier with the auto away / auto return controls linked to the driver's seat belt and the engine start-stop switch or hybrid power switch. Using the switch, the tilt-and-telescopic motors can adjust the steering wheel up and down or forward and back through 40mm ranges.

Lexus UX offers the latest in the brand's multimedia and navigation technology with a 10.25 inch display screen for the Lexus navigation system and the versatile Lexus Enform multimedia system.

The Lexus premium sound system can play back the highest-resolution digital audio formats (WAV, FLAC, ALAC, and OGG Orbis) from a USB device. Dual rear-seat USB ports enable passengers to use and recharge their smartphones or tablets.

The 8-speaker system uses bamboo charcoal speaker diaphragms to reduce mass and deliver natural-sounding voices and improved mid-range sound. It creates a more lifelike sound stage by using tweeters mounted at the sides of the instrument panel that reflect sound off the windscreen. There is also a centre-dash tweeter, a sub-woofer mounted in the luggage area and a powerful amplifier.

The available Mark Levinson premium surround sound system has a 13-speaker array, low-distortion 668W Class D 8 channel amplifier, Quantum Logic Surround Sound and ClariFi™ 2.0 technology to deliver an immersive concert-like sound experience.

Lexus Enform gains several features to support digital lifestyles:
• The Lexus Enform App Suite allows linking of smartphone apps.
• Dynamic Voice Recognition allows natural voice commands.
• USB Video and RealMedia video formats are supported.

The Lexus navigation system features the brand's latest graphical user interface for greatest ease of use and access to features.

Intuitive controls and clear displays
The UX instrument panel design combines unique Lexus traits and intuitive technology. A 7 inch thin-film transistor LCD display meter digitally creates realistic, analogue gauges in a three-dimensional space.

An available head-up display underscores the Lexus UX's high-tech feel while putting vital vehicle information in the driver's line of sight. The large colour display projects the information to a virtual screen 2.5 metres in front of the driver, making it easier to focus on the display as well as objects in front of the vehicle. The bright, high-contrast display is easy to see in daylight and in snowy conditions.

The Lexus Remote Touch Interface (RTI) with haptic feedback is designed to feel as familiar to use as a smartphone. The RTI utilises intuitive operations, such as double tapping and flicking, to mimic common phone gestures.

Frameless construction eliminates edges, and a special coating on the touch-pad surface lets fingers easily slide over it while minimising the appearance of fingerprints. The touchpad can recognise Roman block letters when typing a search name. Touchpad surface haptic vibrations indicate to the user when the cursor is moved, making it easier to align the cursor with the desired function button.

A switch at the base of the touch pad can call up an operation screen with related functions, such as air-conditioning and navigation, enabling easy access without going through menus. In a unique touch of high-tech elegance, the Lexus logo on the pad surface is backlit at night.

Safety technology and driver assist
The UX features the advanced safety technology expected from a Lexus with eight airbags. The Lexus Safety System+ includes:
• All-speed radar active cruise control,
• Pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection,
• Lane-keep assist incorporating lane-departure alert with steering assist,
• Road-sign assist,
• Adaptive high-beam system, and
