LEXUS AUSTRALIA TO RECALL VEHICLES DUE TO POTENTIALLY FAULTY ENGINE CONTROL UNIT

Lexus has initiated a safety recall on approximately 73 LS500 models produced from January 2018 until August 2018.

The recall is due to a condition affecting the Engine Control Unit (ECU).

The subject vehicles are equipped with a V6 twin-turbo engine and a stop-start system that automatically stops and restarts the engine when the vehicle is stationary (e.g. at a stop light) to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Due to improper programming of the ECU, there is a possibility that when the engine restarts within a specific time range after the engine stops, an incorrect intake air volume could be calculated, potentially causing the engine to stall during acceleration from the stationary position.

Loss of motive power while driving could increase the risk of a crash.

Lexus Australia will personally contact all affected vehicle owners, so they can make an appointment at their preferred Lexus dealer.

Lexus dealers will reprogram the ECU free of charge, with the repair taking approximately two hours to complete.

There have been no incidents or injuries reported in Australia as a result of this condition.

For further information, owners can contact the Lexus Customer Assistance Centre on 1800 023 009 (8.00am to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday).

Q1: What is the condition?
A1: The subject vehicles are equipped with a V6 twin-turbo engine and a stop-start system that automatically stops and restarts the engine when the vehicle is stationary (e.g., at a stop light) to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Q2: What is the function of the Engine Control ECU?
A2: Engine Control is performed by the Engine ECU. The Engine ECU is equipped with a Main and Sub Central Processing Unit (CPU). These CPU's manage judgement of engine rotation, intake air volume and fuel injection volume to maintain engine running condition

Q3: Are there any symptoms/warnings before the condition appears in a vehicle?
A3: No. However, if this were to occur, a warning will display in the Multi Information Display (MID) advising of the engine stall. The engine can be re-started as normal. Loss of motive power while driving at could increase the risk of a crash.

Q4: How many vehicles are involved?
A4: In the Australian market, there are 73 vehicles involved.
