LEXUS AUSTRALIA RECALLS ES AND UX VEHICLES TO REPLACE ELECTRONIC BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY

Lexus Australia has today announced that it will initiate a safety recall on 10 ES 300h and UX 250h hybrid vehicles sold to consumers that were produced in May 2019.

In the subject vehicles, there is a possibility components of the electronic brake booster pump assembly may have been manufactured improperly. In some cases, the brake booster pump may stop operating. If this occurs, multiple warning lights and messages could illuminate on the instrument panel and audible chimes could sound.

After several brake pedal applications, power brake assist could be lost completely. A loss of power brake assist while driving could increase the vehicle stopping distance and may increase the risk of an accident.

Lexus Dealers will notify all involved vehicle owners about this recall personally by telephone, requesting they make an appointment at their preferred/closest Lexus Dealer to have the vehicle inspected. If owners could not be reached by telephone, a letter will be sent to their last known address.

Expected commencement timing is July 2019.

For all involved vehicles, Lexus dealers will inspect the brake booster pump and replace it with a new one if necessary, free of charge.

There have been no reported incidents or injuries in Australia or worldwide caused by this condition.

Q1. What is the condition?
A1. The subject vehicles are fitted with an electronically controlled brake booster pump, which consists of an accumulator and a pump motor. The pump motor contains a plastic brush holder that holds motor brushes. There is a possibility that due to an error in the manufacturing process, the dimensions of the brush holder is not to standard. This may cause the pump motor to stop operating. If the pump motor stops operating, multiple warning lights and messages could illuminate, and audible chimes could sound. In this condition, brake assist could be lost, reducing braking performance, increasing the risk of an accident.

A4. If this condition occurs, the vehicle owner should immediately stop driving the vehicle and contact their nearest Lexus Dealer for diagnosis and repair.

If the condition is related to this campaign, the appropriate repair will be performed FREE OF CHARGE to the vehicle owner.

A6. No. There are no other Lexus models in the Australian market that are impacted by this campaign.


Q7. What is Lexus going to do?
A7. Lexus will personally contact all owners by telephone and, if required, also notify owners by mail at their last known address to provide details of this Safety Recall Campaign.

A Lexus Dealer will inspect the Electronic Brake Booster Assembly and replace if required.

This will be performed FREE OF CHARGE to the vehicle owner.


Q8. How long will the repair take?
A8. The replacement of the electronic controlled brake booster pump will take approximately 5 to 6 hours. However, it may be necessary for the owner to make the vehicle available for a longer period of time depending upon the Dealer's work schedule.

A9. Owners with additional questions or concerns are asked to please contact their local Lexus Dealer in the first instance or the Lexus Customer Assistance Centre on 1800 023 009 from 8am - 6pm Monday to Friday. Please quote your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Q11. Toyota recently issued a sales stop. Is this recall in relation to the same issue?
A11. Yes, this is in relation to the same issue. Lexus Australia recently put a selected number of vehicles on a temporary sales stop, as a precautionary measure to understand the consistency of manufacturing amongst those vehicles. This investigation was necessary to determine next steps. The majority of vehicles inspected were found to be consistent with Lexus' manufacturing standards and have since been released. Unfortunately, 10 vehicles had already been delivered when the sales stop was put in place and have therefore not been inspected. Subsequently a recall for these vehicles has been announced.
