Press Releases

LEXUS AUSTRALIA TO RECALL IS 350/250 AND IS-F

Lexus Australia has announced a recall of Lexus IS250, IS350 and IS-F models due to an issue with the airbag inflator ignition booster tablets.

Involved vehicles were previously subject to the compulsory Takata airbag recall where the passenger's side front airbag inflator was replaced.

During inflator manufacture, it is possible that some of the replacement inflators were produced without ignition booster tablets in one or two parts of the inflator. In this condition, the front passenger airbag may not fully inflate during deployment, which may increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

This condition is completely separate from the compulsory Takata airbag recall and there is no risk of this condition leading to airbag rupture.

Lexus will shortly contact all affected vehicle owners by mail advising them details of this recall campaign. Once replacement parts are available Lexus will again contact all affected vehicle owners in a number of ways (including by mail, phone and email) to make an appointment with any authorised Lexus dealer to have the repair completed.

It is anticipated that replacement parts will become available during Quarter 4, 2019.

Replacement of the front passenger airbag inflator assembly will take approximately four hours. However, depending on the Dealer's work schedule, it may be necessary to make a vehicle available for a slightly longer time.

All rectification works will be carried out free of charge to the vehicle owner.

Details of the affected vehicles' VIN range and production periods can be found below.

For further information, owners can contact their preferred Lexus Dealer or the Lexus Customer Assistance Centre on 1800 023 009.

Information about recalls is also available at the ACCC's Product Safety Australia website (https://www.productsafety.gov.au/recalls).

Lexus apologises for any inconvenience caused by the recall campaign.

Q2. These vehicles were previously involved in the compulsory Takata airbag recall, how is this recall different from the last ones? Why is Lexus re-notifying owners?
A2. Involved vehicles were previously subject to the compulsory Takata airbag recall where the front passenger airbag inflators were replaced with new Takata-desiccated front passenger airbag inflators.

In this current recall, the replacement airbag inflators may have been manufactured incorrectly and will be now replaced with parts produced by alternate suppliers (not Takata).

Q3. How many vehicles are involved?
A3. 13,768 vehicles are involved in Australia.

Q4. What is the production period of the involved vehicles?
A4. The involved vehicles were produced between September 2005 and December 2012 depending on the model.

Q5. What is the condition?
A5. During inflator manufacture, it is possible that some of the replacement inflators were produced without ignition booster tablets in one or two parts of the inflator. In this condition, the front passenger airbag may not fully inflate during deployment, which may increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Q6. Can this condition result in inflator rupture?
A6. No. This condition is completely separate from the compulsory Takata airbag recall and there is no risk of this condition leading to airbagrupture.

Q7.What is the function of the Inflator?
A7. The inflator is a device contained within the airbag assembly. It contains a solid propellant which is ignited in the event airbag deployment is necessary. When ignited, the solid propellant expands into an inert gas, inflating the airbag.
